Burglars damaged Saturday morning at Messinger & Co. Clothing House and Pollasky’s Shoe Store. A switch engine and a double header caused freight confusion during the incident.
Nightwatch Parker found burglars at the Pollasky shoe store early Saturday between 2 and 4 am lighting matches and at the cash register. He summoned Wright House night clerk R. N. Fredricks to guard the front door while he watched the rear. After believing the robbers had fled, Parker went to Pollasky’s home to awaken him.
Last Saturday a head on crash near the freight depot damaged a double header and a switch engine. Engine number on the double header was out of service and switch engine 80 was badly damaged needing repairs. The front car also suffered severe truck damage.
The Union Telephone company reports rapid growth with Alma exchange at about 200 subscribers and contracts to reach 20 more, prompting night service launches. Similar expansions occur in St Louis and Iranga, reflecting a rising user base and broader connections to banks depots factories and businesses across Gratiot county.
A short history of Thompsond and Sanderhoff hardware firm tracing its origins to 1808 partnership between Thompson and Otto Sanderhoff, growth after leasing J. F. Schwartz store, and expansion into agricultural implements. In 1909 the firm added a new partner, G. Ross Thompson of Milford, shifting focus to builders hardware and stoves, with a push on the Retort Oak soft coal stove.
Mesara Thompson and Sanderhoff lead a staff of sound business men in Alma. Sanderhoff serves on the village council while Thompson recently joined the fire department, both regarded as desirable citizens. A large Jewel line in stores highlights season’s trade with paces in stock and a broad range of guns and accessories for hunters.
