A Munich court dispute over a milk license stalls as two juries remain hopelessly divided on key issues. Plaintiffs and defendants await further direction from the presiding judge as deliberations continue.
A jury failed to reach a verdict after hours of deliberation in Justice Spinney's court on a milk license violation case against Mrs. Ida Minick. The charge alleged selling milk without a city license under ordinance 41, prompting debate over whether selling milk constitutes business. The panel reported 4 to 2 for conviction but was discharged, with retrial likely. The article notes 46 licensed vendors in Alma, with 37 servicing one cow, and discusses health protection aims behind licensing.

Mrs. H. J. Winchell, wife of Sta tonmaster H. J. Winchell, was badly burned in an explosion at her home in the opera house block Saturday morning. The stove leaked gasoline, ignition sent flames up her face and neck, but she did not inhale flames. Medical aid arrived. injuries are serious but not fatal and will heal.
Post offices in Jackson hosted the first meeting of the Michigan State Association of Assistant Postmasters on September 24 with about 50 attendees. I S Fink was elected second vice president, and Frank S Knowles was named president. The group aims to improve service via idea exchange and as a step toward civil service enrollment for assistants.
The next circuit court term is set for October with most cases likely postponed to November. A massive Saturday dawn fire at River Side Dairy consumed two barns a grainery and an ice house causing about 10000 in losses. Firemen led by Chief Fishbeck saved the main house though horses were trapped. Origin undetermined with suspicions of tramp-caused ignition. Proprietor Mrs A W Wright leased to Mr Ross. insured for around 2500.
Ross loses 200 tons of hay all his grain three horses dairy equipment and farm implements in a blaze. Insurance policy of 575 is noted. Estimated total loss ranges from 8000 to 10000 dollars. The twenty cattle dairy herd had been turned out into the yard after milking and thus escaped destruction.
The second annual class rush between sophomores and freshmen ended at noon Wednesday with an overwhelming win for the freshmen who outnumbered the sophomores nearly two to one. The crowd, including upperclassmen, watched as the fight grew fierce yet orderly, leaving only minor bruises and a ruffled appearance. The freshmen, a large and husky group, appear capable of notable feats.
Mr and Mrs Emerson Ross of Union and Mr and Mrs King of Crystal guest at E Ross home. Rebekah lodge members, including Mrs Ross, helped replace goods removed in the fire early Saturday. Four rooms were settled before departure.
Dr. B H McMullen, surgeon for the Ann Arbor railway on the northern division, states future injured workers will be taken to Cadillac hospital instead of Ann Arbor. The hospital will treat all injured between Frankfort and Owosso, with Edward Shorter as the first railway patient from the Mt. Pleasant head-on collision.
The class of 1909 at Alma College elected officers at a Monday evening meeting. Lois Fraker of Alma was chosen president with Leroy Marshall of Marengo Illinois as vice president and Cook of Alma as secretary and treasurer. The class includes ten seniors this year, four boys and six girls.
The Alma sugar plant begins accepting beets at outside weigh stations and opens its local weigh station as the 1908 campaign starts. Expected to run about 100 days, with General Manager Allen overseeing his first such campaign. Saginaw Valley notes from Michigan Sugar report many weigh stations open, harvest underway, dry ground causing tare, high sugar content, and sugar making to begin soon. Also, the Presbyterian Fortnightly Club plans a meeting with Mrs J H Lancashire and kindergarten head Min Mugins to discuss Hull House Social Settlement.
Government notes that annual forest fires cost up to a million dollars daily nationwide and stresses prevention through patrols, brush disposal, and cooperation. It cites 1,851 rangers patrolling 168 million acres, with 16 miles of road and 8,900 miles of trails built, fire breaks, telephone lines, and supplied tools to fight fires effectively.
The total administration per acre including fire patrol is one cent. The entire forest area could be protected at under 8 million dollars, saving 20 million annually in timber value and avoiding losses of life soil fertility river courses and farm country wealth and land values.
The Republican state convention in Detroit nominated a full slate: Fred C. Martindale for Secretary of State. Alex F. Sleeper for State Treasurer. John E. Bird for Attorney General. Oramel S. Fuller for Auditor General. Huntley Russell for State Land Commissioner. Luther L. Wright for Superintendent of Public Instruction. Wm. J. McKone for State Board of Education. Flavius L. Brooke to fill the Supreme Court vacancy. T. A. Ely joined the permanent organization committee and A. B. Darragh of St. Louis served on resolutions.
The surprise of the year came as Pleety McComb decided to enroll for his junior year at the University of Michigan. He will finish his course there before moving on. The Athletic Association elected officers led by President Byron Chapel and Secretary Stanley Graves. Football manager is Prof J H Mitchell. Football drills continue as players push for a place on the squad amid concerns over association strength and future of the M I A A.
Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Adams received a notice Saturday of the death of Mrs. Mary E Jessop, mother of Mrs. Adams, which occurred in Detroit on the 25th. Mrs. Jessop visited her daughter here last February and made many friends who extend sincere sympathy to Mrs. Jessop in her bereavement.
Alma residents mourn Pearl Fuller a former Alma College athlete and mining engineer who died at his Virginia Minnesota home after a week with pneumonia. Born March 29 1882 he captained Alma College baseball and football teams and coached the college eleven in 1904. He leaves a widow and young daughter along with several step relatives and his father Henry Fuller.
Deputy Sheriff Sprague traveled to Flint on Saturday to locate William H. Sherman, formerly of the city, about a small board bill contracted while boarding with J. D. Struble. The bill totaled 48 dollars and change, overlooked by Sherman on leaving. Sprague found Sherman Monday afternoon and Sherman decided to pay the bill after considering a return to Alma. The amount owed was only a few dollars above 40.
Doctors I N Brainerd and J M Day open a lecture series for the anti tuberculosis society at the M E church next Friday night. Free by invitation under the Ladies Civic Improvement league auspices. Dr Brainerd will speak on The History and Etiology of Tuberculosis with Dr Day leading the discussion. Lecture begins 7 30 pm. Otis H L Sprague visited Detroit on the Ann Arbor excursion and returned Sunday evening.
