Army goods sale ends in two hours after 9 a m start

A city hall sale of army goods concluded within two hours, with nearly all items sold except a few brooms and boots. Crowds surged in early and clerks rushed to checkouts as blankets and canned goods vanished quickly. Officials plan another sale in coming weeks due to strong turnout and interest. Commission Directs Gas Testing By City Manager

At a Tuesday city commission meeting William F E Reynolds city manager was ordered to perform daily gas quality tests on Gratiot County Gas Co supplies to ensure conformity with franchise standards. The resolution from Commissioner Creaser with support from Chick passed unanimously amid complaints over current gas quality and specifications. The city will procure testing instruments immediately and Reynolds will test the gas every twenty four hours.

Alma Lyceum Chautauqua tickets on sale

The Alma Lyceum Chautauqua course tickets are selling for the winter season. Purchasers should buy before Monday December 1 as reserved seat drawings occur then at Brunner's drug store. Tickets are available at Alma banks drug stores or from the two solicitors. If sales stay steady all seats may be sold before opening night Monday December 8 featuring John Kendrick Bangs at the Methodist Episcopal church.

Michigan Northern freight earnings projected by reports

Tonnage reports to the state utilities commission show the Michigan Northern Railroad would average about two million dollars in freight earnings, excluding terminal freight. The figures, compiled from conservative data in cities and towns, reflect potential tonnage if the road is built. Passenger earnings are not estimated and would depend on territory development and demand.

Roof Under Construction At Northern Wheel Plant

Genesta theatre sale brings McLaughlin to Alma project

Raymond J. McLaughlin of St Johns has closed an option for the Genesta theatre in the John D Spinney building on East Superior street and will take possession around December 1. He plans to merge the Genesta into a larger first floor auditorium, redecorate, and boost capacity. He also intends to operate his St Johns theatre, aiming to provide Alma and St Johns with better pictures. Genesta’s owner, Mr Genesta, will stay in California for the winter, leaving Alma after the first of the month.

Alma College preps for Thanksgiving recess and holidays

Alma College and the public schools close early for the Thanksgiving week to allow students to travel home for the holiday. Most students leave, with a few staying locally. school rooms schedule brief programs, and classes resume Monday. Mine Helen Parson of Holland visits Alma friends for the holiday.

Serbians Sent to Alma College for Education

Two Eastern European Serbians, Alexander Milicho vich and Milbourne Lepossovich, have been sent to Alma College to attend classes. They are the first from Serbia to enroll at this Presbyterian college in the city. Dr. Roselie Slaughter Morton organized the arrangement to educate about sixty youths in American institutions. Loponsavich, 22, served in the Serbian army and spent two years as a Austrian prisoner in Hungary before returning to service. Milichevich studied in Serbia and later in a Serbian school in Paris during the war. Neither man speaks English. one knows French and German, the other French. Credits from European institutions are not yet settled, but they are expected to count as sophomores.

Alma Woman Killed in Auto Crash Near Coldwater

Mrs. Mary Catherine Bartlett of Alma was killed and her husband Thomas Bartlett injured when their car went into a ditch near Coldwater and overturned. She was pinned under the vehicle as they were en route to Florida for the winter. The funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal church in Alma with interment in Riverside cemetery. The family had long resided in Gratiot county. Mary Catherine Currence Bartlett, born 1858 in Sumner township, married to Thomas M. Bartlett in 185..., had lived in Alma most of her life. A Ladies Guild Bazaar and Christmas displays were announced, and St. John’s Episcopal church planned a Sunday confirmation service by Bishop Charles J. Williams.
