Alma city to run limited army goods sale this week

Bills of lading show Alma plans to sell army goods to residents on Monday and Tuesday. Shortages at Detroit warehouses reduced items like strip bacon and wine can be sold at 23 cents per pound, with six hundred tomatoes, twelve hundred sweet corn and peas, baked beans and soup also available. To curb demand, a twelve can limit per person is set, amid merchant objections and city officials noting the large savings for Alma residents.

Alma Lyceum Course Announced with Six Winter Attractions

Old Resident of City Dies Friday

Henry Ernest Walton a long time city resident died Friday evening at his daughter's home on State street after months of illness from a paralytic stroke in August He was born in Oxford England December 26 1840 and died November 7 1910 in Alma Michigan He came to the United States in 1860 and was active in church and mission work in Oberlin Ohio later joining the Baptist church in Alma He left a widow three children and several siblings Funeral services were held Monday at 2 pm at the family residence with Rev J W Priest and Dr Jackson officiating The Alma Fire Department fought a small blaze at Forest Raley’s corner before noon and the loss was under 1000

Car Crash Fatality Struck Man From Wagon On East Superior Street

A 23 year old man identified as David Hannafin died Monday after a wagon he rode in was struck by an automobile driven by Victor Slater. The collision threw Hannafin onto the pavement near the bridge on East Superior street in dark, stormy conditions. Bystanders rushed him to Brainerd hospital, where internal injuries were deemed fatal. Reports differ on whether Slater or the wagon rider contributed to the accident.

Pleasing Recital At Alma College Music Faculty

Alma residents packed Cole Love Chapel for a Alma College Department of Music recital featuring Italian Serenade and Rondo Capriccioso plus selections by Maykapar Brahms Mendelssohn Chadwick and Beethoven. The program included Miss Crosby Miss Roberts and Mr Hosmer among performers. Poston Accepts Local Ministry Chas. D. Poston of Covington Ky has accepted a call to the Church of Christ in Alma replacing J. S. Baum. Poston, Bethany College graduate, comes with twelve years ministerial experience and aims to lead growth as the new church building rises on East Superior Street. Services currently held in the old Wm. S. Hart building.
