Interchurch Committee Reports on Financial Drive

START CONCERTS Alma Masonic Band to Play Weekly

Alma plans weekly concerts in two weeks with the Masonic band. Frank J. Tucker says performances may be in the city park or on the street, with evenings to be decided. The band, about twenty trained musicians and new uniforms, aims for high standards since Republic band’s disbanding.

Gas company petitions for rate hike and stock issuance

Gran tiot County Gas Company asks the Michigan Public Utilities Commission to set a rate, take jurisdiction, and authorize $60,000 of 7 percent preferred stock to be sold at no less than 40. The filing seeks temporary gas rates of $2.00 gross or $1.75 net pending appraisal, plus plant improvements at the Alma plant funded by the stock sale. The proposed upgrades include a 100,000 cubic foot gas holder, coal bins, condensing system, filter beds, gas mains, meters, and other costs.

Wright House remodeling to begin on Monday at Alma hotel

Broughton and Son contractors will start work Monday to remodel Alma's Wright House into an eighty room first class hotel owned by Mrs. Maury Brearley. Plans cover front of hotel dining room Jeby rooms and a new heating plant. Project may cost around 50000 and take several weeks as plans finalize amid fluctuating material costs. Heavier seeding advised for barley and oats plantings this spring by Prof J F Cox. Farmers urged to plant nine or ten pecks per acre of barley and adjust oats timing, with many Michigan farmers likely to plant in May.

The Gratiot County Good Health society met in the Wright House parlor. Treasurer’s report shows about 1500 dollars on hand for a permanent county medical clinic and a public health nurse. Mrs Shepard elected as delegate to the state convention. No public health nurse available. clinic delayed until nurse is secured. Directors to meet soon to decide future work. Money raised from Red Grams Christmas meals praised.

Normalites Fall to Alma in Slugging Contest

Alma college defeated Mt Pleasant Normal 7 to 1 in a game described as a slugging test rather than pitching. Alma led 1-0 early, exploded for six runs in the third, added three in the fifth, and held the Teachers to ten hits while tallying thirteen runs. Alma pitchers battled, while Mt Pleasant’s hitters managed four hits off Captain Boyne in the early innings.

Miss Cherry Blossom musical in Alma high school auditorium

Under the First Presbyterian Youth class a musical comedy titled Miss Cherry Blossom opens May 7 at 8 16 p m in Alma High School auditorium. The production, directed by Miss Joan Sherman, features a large cast with Evelyn Barnes Marie Myers Rae Donald Smith and Gordon MacDonald among others. The scene is a Tokyo tea garden with Geisha dances and songs. Admission is fifty cents. The Alma modern $100000 Strang theatre opens mid month with details to follow May 18.
