The commission discusses adjournment timing for the legislative session with a May 15 finish target and a one week adjournment, while McKay and Read push for broader local bill handling and a primary reform plan. The Rathbone Sisters of District No 3 held their first convention in Alma on May 4 with larger attendance including delegates from Evart and Mt Pleasant. The pupils of theMuse School presented a recital at the college chapel on Tuesday evening. The ensemble, led by Misses Messinger, Wallace, Del, and Dymond, delivered notably strong vocal and instrumental numbers.
A Mt Pleasant resident writes Senator H J Kane urging caution on the anti cigarette bill. The letter argues cigarettes have useful value and mocks the measure, proposing printed epitaphs about cigarette harm if the bill fails. It requests appropriation for publishing the epitaphs to be mailed to Michigan mothers.
The chapel event features Phi Phi Alpha affirming the open shop in a contest with Zeta Sigma defending. Debaters include Davi A. Harbor Beach confirms FE Ellsworth will head Alma Public Schools succeeding six years at Harbor Beach. Ellsworth, a Normal College graduate class of 7, has eleven years teaching experience and is praised for transforming Harbor Beach schools into a top district.
The first annual President's Conference of the Young Men's Christian Associations of Michigan colleges convened last Saturday at Alma. Delegates from most state colleges attended, with C D Churrey of Olivet and Gattin of University of Michigan among speakers. The event included services, a Sunday Union meeting, and a closing conference, described as inspiring and helpful for Christian life.
Cant beat Swigart as he is reelected to teach science at Paw Paw High School and will begin the term after Alma College closure. He plans to stay for another year with a boost in salary. Swigart visited his parents Mr and Mrs J T Swigart for a short stay.
The Sumner Grange held its last meeting at Bra Wo J Kneers last Thursday evening with many members present. The debate on hen care, breeds, and poultry business featured impromptu readings as the appointed leader was absent. Next gathering set for May 11 at 5 o clock at Bre Wim Seaman's with readings and a discussion on public utilities under government control.
Washington dispatch reports President Roosevelt expanding civil service actions to postmasters of all classes. The Postmaster General confirms charges may be filed for cause to change presidential class postmasters, with notice to all affected parties to meet by a defined date to settle matters.
Mayor Delavan announced Tuesday night the new city officers and their annual salaries. Key positions include street commissioner John Greig, marshal B C Button, nightwatch and deputy marshal Robert Sims, health officer Dr T Lamb, city surveyor James C Chane, and city attorney James G Kresk. The fires term system report was accepted and to be installed within ninety days.
The Pleasant Ladin School baseball team faced Red Men in a midweek camp game on Davis Field. Alma led from the start as Balter and Joedlons starred in a high error game with Plymouth, while Watthrow and Warrenius contributed for Alma.
