Ex Cel All Paint opens Alma plant with strong orders

Ex Cel All Paint company starts operations at its Alma plant after a challenging build in fall and winter. Manager Bamborough says two carloads of Chicago equipment arrived recently and that orders are piling up. Local support from citizens, the board of trade and city council is noted, with stock nearly subscribed and prospects bright for growth and publicity for Alma.

Rockstein Buys M. A. Meidler Grocery in Alma

Louis Rockstein of Rin Falls Wisconsin has purchased the M A Meidler grocery at Superior and Woodworth Alma. Mr Medler has run the store for ten to twelve years and is known county wide. Rockstein plans changes including remodeling and enlarging the stock. he has not decided his next moves.

Holy Week Services Declared at St Johns Church Schedule

Holy Week begins Monday March 26 at St Johns with Holy Communion at 9 10 for the first four days. Good Friday features a three hour Memorial Service from noon to 8 pm. City residents invited especially to Thursday and Friday services. Patty Arbuckle to perform in return engagement of Out West life hour Wednesday.

Dedicated Flag Service at Presbyterian Church

The Presbyterian Church in this city dedicated its service flag Tuesday evening with an audience of locals. Meek N Notestein presented the flag, Rev. William Hy Mason gave the dedicatory address, and Willard Beshyetoor with Frank Notestein were cited as the flag bearers. The program closed with the National Anthem and included Alma High School and cadet participants. Twenty four service members are named as wearers of the flag, including Lieut. C. B. Gardner and Lieut. Mark Spinney, among others, with several listed as hospital apprentice and cadet roles.

Alma Board of Trade Banquet Planned for March 27

The Alma Board of Trade will host its monthly banquet on March 27 at 6 o'clock. Fred Slater chairs the arrangements and secured speakers. HL M Crooks of Alma College will be toastmaster, Frank Welton of Cadillac will be principal speaker, with talks by Charlee G Rhowes on the Republic and its outlook and by Bam Hervard outlining work for the factory. L Jolisot will discuss the aims of the Board of Trade. The event includes a business meeting and a social period afterward.

Pioneer Dead in Elwell At 75 Mrs Phoebe Madden

Mrs Phoebe Madden longtime Elwell resident died at home Sunday aged 75 after a illness dating to May. Born September 18 1842 in Middlesex New York she moved with parents to Michigan later living in Oakland Clinton County and St Louis before moving to Edwell. Survived by four children Kay Alma William A Renest A and Olive Lathrop three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral was at the home with interment in St Louis.

Died Saturday in city after long illness

Join Gaffney, age about 41, longtime city resident, died Saturday at his mother's home Mrs. Syl Gaffney after a prolonged illness. Born in the city he attended local schools, later became ill with tuberculosis and complications. Funeral services were held Monday at Woodworth and Center streets with Rev. J Frank Jackson officiating and burial in Riverside cemetery beside his father. He leaves a grieving mother, a brother Russell and other relatives in the state. The World winner contends a comedy titled Toto opens Tuesday.

A Brainerd hospital report notes Walter D Walker and daughter Edna of St Louis dying from to oth fever after exposure. Mrs Walker died March 15 and Edna died March 17. Walter improves. Eleanor Wardwell born Oct 2 1877 in Clinton Co Mich married Walter J Walker and had four children. Vaudeville Show Date Change for Republic Attraction

The Republic vaudeville show will now be held on Monday and Tuesday nights March 25 and 26. A large, experienced cast from Detroit and local talent promise a high quality program with new stunts and clean entertainment. Proceeds go to the Republic athletic fund supporting Alma plant employees. Tickets are available at the Republic employment office or box office. Voters to decide on city commission form at April election

Voters in the city will decide at an April special election whether to adopt a commission form of government. Petitions propose a nine member charter revision commission with names to appear on the ballot. If approved, the revised charter must pass before commissioners are chosen to run city affairs.

The bride was Mary E Ship the maid of honor was Gladys Lea a Virginia belle and Cores Sutton Jr editor of Motor Life served as best man. After a short wedding tour the couple returned to Alma where they will settle. Walter A Sibley is the son of L A Sharp and a well known Alma resident. He edits the Republic Motor Truck company weekly Ridto and is known locally. Mrs Sibley is an Alma college graduate. The couple receive congratulations from friends.

RULE HOLDS UP FARMERS DEFERRED CLASS FOR FARM WORK

A circular from the Adjutant General directs deferred classification for men wholly engaged in agricultural work due to farm labor scarcity. It warns boards to monitor time devoted to farming and call for military duty if any man is not fully employed in agriculture. Citizens are asked to report such cases to the local draft board.
