Adams Chosen by Alma Republicans for City Treasurer

The Alma city Republican convention at City Hall nominated Francis King for mayor on the first ballot and reselected D W Adams for city treasurer. King, a former two time mayor and state senator, was urged as the needed leader for the coming year. The convention also named nominees for clerk and justice of the peace after ballots and informal votes. The selectees were to be finalized after ward caucuses Friday night.

Alma High selects debating teams for railroads issue

The Alma high school debaters choose teams to clash with Big Rapids and Tonia. The question is government ownership of railroads. The affirmative team includes Robert Wyatt Lester Allen and Donald Dunham with Donald Sullivan as alternate. The negative team features Frank Notestein George Olmstead Harold Johnstone and Velmer Lyons as alternate.

Heavy Recruiting In Alma This Month

Alma’s local recruiting office reports over eighty enlistments for February and March the high mark for corporal Tom Boston and his team, with Alma set to gain a central recruiting office next month. The February tally places Alma ahead of Kalamazoo Battle Creek Muskegon and Lansing, as Owosso contributed many new names to the roster in aviation signal corps ambulances and coast artillery postings. Government allowances for families of soldiers are outlined, including increases for wives and children.

Alma College Baseball Schedule Includes Home Games

Alma College will play a typical spring baseball schedule with most Michigan Intercollegiate opponents. Albion is absent as the Methodists do not field a team. The list includes M. A. C. East Lansing, Ypsi Normal, Olivet, Kalamazoo, Hillsdale, and Mt. Piewsant Normals, with two Mt. Fiewsant games planned. Presbyterians 10 Dedicating Their Flag

The First Presbyterian church will dedicate a Service Flag on Tuesday March 24 at THO under the Men s Society to honor church members who answered their country s call. The program includes music by the high school chorus directed by Mae Jones, a flag presentation by Mrs FN Notestein, and a dedicatory address by Rev Horace Cady Wilson. Genesta Theatre Changes Hands and Rebrands

Genesta Theatre in Alma is sold by owner Ailbert Genests to A H Ashley who will assume March 17 and close for repairs through April. The venue will reopen as Liberty Theatre around April 1 with leading photoplays, new ventilation, wiring, fixtures, and a tire proof booth under Detroit and local contractors.

Working Reserve urged for farm service in Michigan

County directors of the Boys Working Reserve met at the Capitol to organize teens aged sixteen to twenty one for farm work and service. Sixty five counties reported activity with officers tasked to enroll city and farm youth. Speakers urged school attendance if possible, noting badges for 36 days of farm labor, and stressing patriotism to support soldiers abroad.

Alma Democrats Nominate Charles Murphy for Mayor

In Alma the Democratic city convention nominated Charles R. Murphy a popular local businessman for mayor after hours of speeches and debate over resolutions. J J Heiman was elected temporary chair and Murphy made permanent chairman. Nominations for ward supervisors aldermen and constables followed with several candidates and a clerk contest before Murphy was unanimously chosen for mayor. The party left the treasurer blank and selected William E. Rogers for justice of the peace. convention adjourned.

Community Singing Benefits From Red Cross Stories
