Alma business directory lists bankers lawyers doctors and clergy with office hours and addresses. Local editor notes residents visiting Saginaw Ithaca Adrian Cadillac and Lake areas amid auctions, logging and farm activity, with church events and social gatherings at Disciple church and Grange hall.
The charter election last Monday drew 214 votes with a single ticket in the field. Offiers chosen for the year include President Fredrick H Hamlin ac Clerk James G Kress Robert D Lemen Treasurer Gerritt Ward Trustees Martin Montigel John H Arnold Edward Hasawh Nelson J MARY Crane Derwin Ely Assessor George L Patel and others. The Republican ticket was elected straight with president treasurer and one trustee on both ballots. A second report notes 181 votes and names James O Hilton F M Vandercook Treasurer James A Wheeler Assessor George L Patel Thos Bamborough A TL Lowrey BD Phillips Holliday RK Titus. A party plan split officers by party across posts with committees.
In circuit court the People versus Frank Baker pled guilty to obtaining money under false pretenses and was fined $30. Churchill brothers Elias Churchill and Bayard Churchill pled guilty to assault with intent to do great bodily harm and were fined $20 each. Several cases, including Robinson v Phinney and Bullock, Ingalls Horton v Sullivan, and Emanuel Emsley v Sullivan, proceed or are continued on appeal. Replevin cases, ejectment, and divorces appear with various continuances and fee payments. some settlements noted.
The program for the Horticultural Institute in St Louis Michigan on Tuesday March 17 lists opening remarks by Edwy Reid and Michigan state horticultural society secretary, talks on orchard care and paper instruments, demonstrations, and a question box. Oscar Kelly serves as chairman.
Alma in session March 3 1891 approves February claims including repairs and supplies to Hose Gate Alma Roller Mills and local services. President Bagley names Hall Young as Registration board and Dunham as election inspector. meeting adjourned amid notes on Alpha Theta Alma College program and inquiry into Zeta Sigma.
The Household publishes a subscriber drive offering a Columbia Light Roadster Bicycle as a prize for the third largest list of new subscribers between March 1 and August 1. The March edition also features offers for the first and second largest lists, including a Miller Upright Piano and a 3700 Horse and Goddard Buggy. Copies are available at newsstands or by mail from The Household Company, 50 Bromfeld St., Boston.
