Friday Night Lecture on Success by Prof Ferris

The Epworth League closed its course with Prof Ferris from Big Rapids Industrial School discussing success. He urged goal setting from childhood, economy, honesty, and diligence to reach a college education or business career, praising perseverance over obstacles, and closing with praise for his lecture. Prof Webb of Albion Spreads Anti Saloon Gospel

In Alma and Oberlin inspired by Anti-Saloon League efforts Professor Webb of Albion College spoke at a Presbyterian church Sunday morning and again at a large evening mass meeting in the opera house. He urged attendance at primaries to elect temperance minded officials and highlighted the league’s growth from Oberlin Ohio to a broad region. Short talks by Rev. J W McAllister Rev W F P Jones and Rev H W Clough complemented the program.

Republicans Sweep Alma Village Election Amid Free Silver Fight

In Alma the village election produced a decisive Republican victory despite a heated contest centered on silver. The full Republican ticket won by an average margin of about 96 votes as 378 of 428 names cast ballots. The vote list shows Fox and Bagley for president, and John Dean among trustees with two years. Future measures on saloon questions were debated but Republicans prevailed.

Alma Team to Lead Local Basball League Effort

A Saturday night meeting at the Wright House formed a push to organize a village baseball team in Alma. Nearly all local players joined, a team was chosen, and a county league and championship cup were proposed. Citizens urged strong business and civic support to fund the effort. Also noted is a Township Sunday School Convention set for March 14, 1997 with sessions at the Baptist and Presbyterian churches and a plea for a Gratiot County News correspondent to report town news.
