Alma High alumni banquet ends year with toastmaster Delavan

The Alma High School Alumni Association annual banquet closed with Toastmaster C G Delavan and Paul Crandall leading for the class of 1910. Guests gathered at eight thirty in the Wright house to a lavish menu, toasts honoring graduates and teachers, and remarks by Alger Wood, B L Johnson, Miss Porter, and Dr J Day.

Toledo Visitors Tour Alma on Private Motor Car

About fifty to sixty Toledo wholesale merchants visited Alma on a private motor car trip via the Ann Arbor line. They aimed to meet patrons along the route, arrived around 3:30 but were late, and toured local firms including Gosline Coal, Bank of Commerce, Toledo Glass, Merrell & Co, Crown Eager Mull, Weeds Cobury, Mank Lumber, Grandy Coal, and other Toledo area businesses.

Beans Market Rises as Farmers Replant Lentils

The bean market has been rising with a twenty cent per bushel price hike. Hand picked beans fetch about $1.45 to the farmer, boosting demand among bean jobbers statewide. Farmers, busy replanting after a hail storm, are shifting land to beans, with a Detroit meeting in early July to set new bean grading methods for future buying. The Michigan Bean Jobbers Association plans its regular meeting in Detroit in September.

Thief From Minstrels Captured After County Chase

Sheriff Rowell Deputy Ennis and Frank Convis led a long pursuit in Gratiot County aided by Glen Ballard from M A C and farmers to capture Wilber Collins a traveling thief who stole a suitcase of clothes from the Allenhite Minstrels. He was jailed then fined or jailed in Detroit for larceny.

Lindley 18 Honored for Columbia Scholarship

Adelbert Lindley of Lupton Michigan, Alma College graduate, wins a Columbia University scholarship. Few scholarships were offered among about one thousand applicants reflecting his top grades, college paper staff service, YMCA work, and self-supported study. He will study law next year at Columbia. The award honors both Lindley and Alma College.

Alma Girl Marries in Mexico Bride of Frank J Nagel

Miss Lulu Brock, daughter of Mr and Mrs W A Brock of Alma, wed Frank J Nagel in Parral Mexico on June 7. The civil ceremony was conducted by the Jefe Politico and a Congregational minister performed the religious service. Two Brock brothers attended, and Miss Brock has studied at Alma High School and Alma College before earning a Michigan University degree. She has taught in private schools for American children since leaving Alma two years ago.

Mrs George Weeks Dies After Illness at Ann Arbor

Mrs George Weeks of Ithaca died in University hospital Ann Arbor after four months of treatment for an abscess. Her husband Mr Weeks had taken a position in Owesso as creamery manager and accompanied her to Ann Arbor, returning home as she worsened. A week ago Saturday she gave birth to a baby girl now living. the infant was taken to Ithaca with the mother's body. Three other children survive. Funeral held Monday in Ithaca. Gratiot county friends extend sympathy.

Circus Tent Fire Sparks From Matches On State Street

A group of boys playing with matches started a burlap circus tent fire on North State Street Saturday morning. A boy in the group tossed a lit match, igniting the burlap. passersby quickly extinguished the blaze before substantial damage occurred.

Alma Wool Buyers Ship Nearly Seventy Five Thousand Pounds

W P Cash F E Pollasky and C L Brewer dominate Alma wool purchases totaling about 75 000 pounds. Cash shipped four carloads to Boston with most sold to that market. Pollasky bought 27000 pounds sent to Boston and Detroit. Brewer purchased 21000 pounds for Rhode Island plus 7000 at Elm Hall and 25000 at St Louis. Prices averaged 194 cents per pound. Season is one of the largest in years.

Potter Takes Reins as County School Commissioner

Potter is elected Republican county school commissioner and will assume duties Saturday. A Ithaca High School and Alma College graduate, he gained recognition for scholarship and teaching work including a 1940-41 stint as an academy instructor in the city. His administration is expected to run efficiently.

Birds Have Seen by Roy Eckert

Graduation Exercises for Class of 1911 at Realty Opera House

The class of nineteen eleven received diplomas Wednesday evening at the Realty Opera House. The Girls Glee Club sang, Rev. W. E. Doty gave an invocation, and Miss Roth Bennett played a difficult piano solo. Prof. D. K. Waldo delivered a practical address urging health, work, love of nature, and sociable recreation, with humor and broadening contact as essential. Certificates were presented by Supt. Ellsworth, naming graduates and listing class members. The class colors were red and white, with the banner “Knowledge Conquers All.”
