Five appointed to the draft board are Sheriff Bradford County Clerk Case and Dr Wheeler. The inclusion of these officials reflects the new appointment lineup.
War Department assigns 140 state officials to oversee the draft machinery under President Wilton’s approval. Gration district’s board includes Short Newell Bradford Bernie Le Case and Meetor Wheeler, with oath and numbering of cards to proceed. Drafts will be determined in Washington by new card numbers and published, while boards grant exemptions per age.
Last Friday evening manager Miller of the Idlehour theater celebrated the venue's opening anniversary in the city. He distributed carnations to ladies and children and cigars to men who attended the show, which included a several reel feature enjoyed by patrons.
Alma college plans a recruiting drive with two applicants, Professor Jamee E. Mitchell and Coach Comer Harry Helmer chosen to head the effort. Mitchell has previous field work for the college, while Helmer has notable experience with Mt. Pleasant Normal.
Charles M Wilson Esq of Grand Rapids trustee of Alma College died at his home after a short illness. A prominent attorney, he was among the youngest trustees having been elected only a few years ago.
From the Detroit Free Press June issue: Rep Barkley’s amendment to the food control bill, banning use of food for beverage production during the war, passed 192 to 114 in the House. The vote marks a notable wartime prohibition milestone.
Gover nor Albert & Steeper issues an informal Fourth of July proclamation urging a sober observance. He calls for heartening discussion of democracy problems and service over celebration, urging citizens to defend the nation with sacrifice and unity at home and in the community.
A local charity event at Alma Driving Club Park on July 4 features auto rides hose reel and tram shooting to raise funds for the Red Cross branch. Admission begins around noon with a $10 per person ticket and a warm community turnout promised.
Dr J N Day and Mrs Eleworth escaped death when a freight train backed onto a street near Ely Street and the Sugar Plant. Day warned the conductor and pulled Mrs Eleworth from the car before the collision smashed it. Both suffered minor injuries from broken glass.
Trip awarded to tRIP TO YELLOW S. W. Blakely, focal agent for the New York Mutual Life Insurance Company, as a reward for outstanding business. He joins several agents on a summer Yellowstone National Park tour with expenses paid, a long-standing honor for top performers.
Whereas it has pleased Providence to remove our beloved W Case from our midst the order mourns his loss as a faithful member. Resolved that the bereaved family receive our sincere condolences. A copy of these resolutions will be inscribed in records and the lodge charter dropped for thirty days. W T Knowlton of Saginaw was in Alma on business today.
Construction begins on a new Redman wholesale building on East Superior Street between two switch tracks. The two story brick structure, 100 feet front with a 31 foot rear, will include a front 32 foot extension and a loading setup to serve both directions, easing traffic for the growing Redman wholesale grocery.
Editor records a May to June journey from Alma to Appleton and Havre, then Fairchild, detailing towns, wheat fields, prairie scenery, and climate. He notes Montana fuel costs, widespread car use, and expectations to visit a nearby coal mine while visiting relatives.
Miss Mae Hodgson director of physical training at Alma college resigns to take a summer position as playground work instructor in Grand Rapids. Her plans for the next college year are not known. Circulation counter noted.

A wedding described as solemn and simple took place Monday at St Mary’s parish with Rev J Stulvey officiating. Virginia Mulvey of Shepherd and Mr William Dixige of Big Rapids were married, with family and out of town guests present including Catherine Stanton and Lavin Stinton. Virginia Mulvey, noted musician and former head of vocal music at Fairmont Normal School, is praised for character and talent. congratulations and best wishes are extended from friends and relatives across several cities.
Detroit wedding records Mateus Pollasky a prominent promoter tied the knot with Eunice Wilhelmine Rosbourgh Wasne of Leving Park Chicago at Temple Beth El Detroit Rabbi Franklin officiated. Attendants included Dr Abrant Metzger and Miss Ade Thosenfield. The couple planned a brief reception and will reside in Alma after the ceremony.
Alma prepares for the opening league game against Michigan rival Saginaw with Mayor McKinney set to pitch and college president Cooke catching. The Republics aim to boost talent from Kalamazoo and Hodianipolix, with Cunningham Wiseman Culver Nevill among arrivals, as the state league includes Bay City Saginaw and Alma. A strong crowd is expected to back Trackmakers in their first league test.
Mr. and Mrs. Shong of Alma observe their golden wedding anniversary with ninety eight relatives and friends in attendance. Al ma merchants announce extended hours for Tuesday night July Sed through July 4th, with shops staying open until 11 p.m. and reopening near the holiday period. The notice lists all barter shops in the city as participating.

After an extended effort, Alma college has purchased a residence for its president at the corner of Philadelphia and West Superior Streets. The home, long occupied by former presidents, will be repaired to first class shape. The purchase price was not disclosed. A public meeting at the opera house Saturday night will discuss army recruitment and defense, with speakers including Hon. W. A. Bahike and several local officials.
Postmaster Vincent P. Cash of Alma now earns 2700 dollars annually as post office receipts rise. The increase marks Alma's first time surpassing Mt. Pleasant and similar Michigan towns in receipts turned in to the department. The Alma Benevolent Society plans a meeting on July at the home of Mrs. Joe Smith, 003 Park Avenue.
The county Red Cross drive surpassed its apportionment as churches and residents contributed heavily. In Altus Alma concerns led gifts including 3100 from the Republic Motor Truck Co and 3250 from FLW Ruggles with other donations. a July 4 matinee at the Alma Driving Club grounds features stock car and horse races plus a shooting tournament. Proceeds fund Red Cross relief for Gratiot County and broader wartime aid.
The Model Bakery has installed a new oven cake machine temperature machine electric bread wrapper sealing machine and wall case and pen racks. A thirty eight foot addition to the building has been built. A truck has been purchased to replace wagon delivery and will soon be in operation to improve service.
The White House picketing by the Woman's Party, once the Congressional Union, is presented as separate from the National Woman Suffrage Association. It argues the group is distinct while asserting its aim to uphold American ideals through its protest and contributions to the suffrage cause.
