The Alma Republics have played four games this season and won one. They finish first of the early schedule, establishing a slow start but a leading position in the standings.
Alma Republics lose to Flint in a Michigan state league game after a strong start. Johnston pitched well until the seventh when Flint capitalized on errors and a key hit to seize control, scoring three runs to take the game. Bay City split the next day with two losses and a strong showing on the mound by Cooking ham.
Leonard Mitchell auctions his three year old auto livery in this city. Putman and Bemis, former employees, form a new partnership to run the business as Putman & Bemis from the Ford garage on East Superior street. Orr of the Republic Motor Truck Company and his father were injured when a passing car forced Orr’s vehicle into a ditch on a Sunday night near Merrill while returning from Saginaw with Mrs Orr. The others escaped serious injury, but the incident prompted hospital treatment and questioned care from the other driver’s party.
President Wilson outlines exemptions for the upcoming draft with strict rules. Local boards decide industrial or agricultural exemptions, while district boards handle appeals. Exemptions include officers, ministers in training, others in government, armed forces, aliens, dependents, and religious groups existing before May 13 1917. Charles A Sawkins, president of the A Sawkins Pana company, died suddenly at home Sunday evening after a bout of illness. He left a wife and seven children, and a line of brothers in Ohio California and Michigan. Requiem High Mass was held at St Mary’s Catholic church with Knights of Columbus in attendance. He founded the firm, worked across the country, and settled in Alma to run the piano business later known as the Sawkins company.
Rev. Caroline Bartlett Crane chaired the Illinois division National Defense committee meeting in Chicago on June 27. The convention supported pairing two men to form a community unit, pledging effort to protect women in industry and care for soldiers and their families.
The defendant known as GOT SIX MONTHS, claiming Chicago Illinois as home, was arrested by Deputy Clarence Wheeler on larceny charges. He was found guilty and sentenced to six months to think it over. He allegedly stole brass and copper from Alma plant operated by Michigan Sugar and copper wire from Perrington.
A two thousand strong crowd attended a Red Cross benefit race program yesterday. The event featured Alma Driving elus and multiple heats with drivers McNabb Monts Hyete and others, plus stock car trials. B Youngs won the three mile auto race in 4 52 on a half mile track, with rivals Brown Nummer and H Taylor competing on Ford Dart and Hudson.
Mr and Mrs Francis Hawley celebrated their fifty year marriage with a large family gathering Tuesday. Thirty two relatives attended from nearby and distant cities including Jackson Detroit and Liberty. A dinner at the Hawley home featured gold and white decor, photos as place cards, and music by Linnie Adelle.
A meeting of district No. 1 in Alma Michigan is set for July 8 1917 at 8 o clock PM to elect one trustee for three years and to vote on 200 for a district boat 1900 for a school house and 460 for equipment and apparatus for the described Hillcrest subdivision property. The meeting also allows voters to transact other business.
Western Michigan recruiting district notes the first voluntary unit of the National Army. The font Regiment of Engineers will enlist unmarried men aged 18 to 40 with forest service cards. Assigned to emergency service, duties will be specialized and the unit aims to be among Roosevelt era mobilization efforts.

Walter Dorman of Raed Citeara and William Hoover were arrested by Garden Furniture and Milling Works officers for missing the June 5 registration day. They are jailed as federal authorities pursue a third man amid a nationwide enforcement of the registration law issued by the president after congressional approval.
The city plans to buy a site in Hillcrest addition for a new centennial district school and a temporary building. Proceeds from the sale of the current property would help fund erection of the new school and related facilities. The owners PW Creaser Hips Moore and J J Sullivan offer a price of 100 dollars for the site and 150 dollars for a temporary structure, with the city to reclaim full value when a permanent school is needed.
At a Monday afternoon meeting Mayor Ka H. McKinney of Alma was elected head of the Alma Republic baseball club now in the Michigan State league. LR Brown became vice president A Archer treasurer George Harmon secretary and J L Hoyt manager. The club plans to add capable players as the second half of the season begins with targets including Mytal, Chilton, Henry and Reese to strengthen the lineup for a possible title run.

The Barnes Garden Furniture and General Milling Works plans a new building at the foot of State Street near Min tiv er. The 28 by 72 foot facility has three rooms including an office, machine, and carpenters room. Mr Barnes will travel to Grand Rapids soon to buy more machinery and will install motors switch systems and conduct wiring. He also plans to add wheels on the system to move lumber, aiming for efficient operation.
