Alma High School to Confer Largest Senior Class Diplomas
The Alma Weigh School commencement week opens with a baccalaureate at First Methodist Episcopal Church led by Rev. M W Duffey. The graduating class of sixty six will receive diplomas in the high school auditorium with Rev. William H Mason delivering the commencement address. The list names Myrtle Adams through Robert H Moth among the senior class. A lawn social follows at the Ruggles home on Thursday, June 20 at four o'clock.

In a case brought by the Pere Marquette railroad against Mt Pleasant, evidence shows the city charter is legal. Clara E Angell a longtime Gratiot County resident died at a local hospital following acute appendicitis on June 17 She was born January 22 1860 in Jordan New York and married Horace B Angell April 10 1870 They had three children Anna M Ira D and Harriet C She is survived by her husband three children one brother Ira D Travis of Salt Lake City a half brother Dudley Marble Syracuse nieces and many friends A service was held at home and burial followed in Riverside Cemetery

President H. M. Crooks of Alma College spoke at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church Detroit urging support for the endowment campaign. The effort, nearing its close, needs about 360000 to cover conditional gifts and pledges, with 120000 still required to meet the original 685000 target. Bank clearings for the week reached 93469.19, down from last year and last week.

Alma City to Cut Tax Rate 85 Cents Per Thousand
Alma's tax rate for this year is fixed at 10.50 per thousand, down from 11.35 last year, a decrease of .85. The lower rate reflects reduced levy and slightly smaller assessed valuation, with last year's pavement funding offsetting part of the budget. Taxes are due July 1 and payable early, with September 14 the final due date to avoid interest.

Last Friday evening Washington School presented Hiawatha's Childhood a one act operetta aided by the High School Girls Glee Club. Donald Hoffman Hubert Bartling Lois Smith led strong performances with supporting turns by Claud Bruce Lyle Thompson and numerous students as fireflies wind spirits and phantoms. Directors Emmet Meyers Mullin Hood Babcock Towers Smith Thom Beck and Everett Giles earned praise for chorus staging dances speaking costumes lighting and overall production success.

Alma College gymnasium bids near to be let
The last day for bids on the Alma College gymnasium was Tuesday June 20. The contract for the new structure is expected to be awarded within a few days and active construction to begin soon by the low bidder. Plans were slow to arrive, delaying bid readiness, as President Crooks and aides press endowment efforts in Detroit before June 30. The trustees may meet there to review bids and expedite the project so the gym is ready for the basketball season.

Bible School Opens Monday At Presbyterian Church
The Summer Bible School begins Monday June 26 at 2:00 a.m. in the Presbyterian Church. It welcomes non Presbyterians and features three paid instructors led by principal Miss Laura Soule. Curricula cover age groups four to six, seven to eleven, and twelve plus with memorized verses, catechism questions, life of Jesus readings, and geography of Palestine. The five week program runs June 26 to July 28, daily 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Gratiot paving hearings set for Pine Avenue work
Gratiot city commission fixed July 11 for the hearing of objections on the special assessment roll for paving Pine avenue from Superior street to Walnut Street. After objections, the commission will seek bids for the street paving, with work expected before fall. The city’s share was in the 1924 budget. Gratiot Avenue paving petition from residents was received but not funded this year. Bonds for Woodworth Avenue and related streets were expected from Detroit Trust Company and to be signed and used to finance paving by week’s end.
