Graduation Day Shines for Gratiot County Students

One hundred ninety five diplomas awarded at the Gratiot County public schools second annual commencement held in the college chapel. Superintendent G E Gannardo handed diplomas to most graduates with forty delayed to receive them later. From Alma, Rev H L Crain delivered an address stressing American youth, heritage, and world-wide responsibility as a nation’s future.

Benefit for Miss Myrtle Walker at Presbyterian church

Citizens plan a benefit for Myrtle Walker, who lost a left limb and right foot at Center street crossing. Edgar Peterson, a Lansing blind violinist, will perform with a blind pianist and cello player along with local talent. Admission 20 cents for children and 5 cents for adults. The event starts at 8 pm Friday evening to raise money for artificial ribs.

Maccabee Rally Draws Members From Several Cities

Last Friday evening the Maccabees held a rally at the K O T M M hall with attendees from Iwell Breckenridge Forest Hill and St Louis. Great Commander Lovelace and District Commander H D Osgood attended. Forest Hill initiated a class of twelve into the order and all joined a banquet prepared by the Lady Maccabees before dispersing in the early hours.

Forest Hill Sunday School Convention a Great Success

The Pine River Sunday School association held the Forest Hill convention Sunday with large attendance throughout sessions. The program was carried out as published with extra numbers, excellent participation, and music by the orchestra enhancing enjoyment. Free will offerings totaled 5 dollars 45 cents, showing strong support for local Sunday school work.

Alma Canton Wins First Prize in Drill Competition

A telegram from Alpena reports Pine River Canton of Alma won first prize in class B at the Grand Encampment L O F drill held Tuesday. The award included 75 dollars in cash, and all participating members received congratulations from friends.

Grade Exercises In City Park Across All School Grades

Event scheduled Friday afternoon June 1 at two o clock in the city park features participation from kindergarten through high school. The program aims to engage pupils and parents with varied acts. Si las Moodys 70th Birthday Honored by Forest Hill

Silas Moody of Forest Hill celebrated his seventieth birthday with 115 neighbors and friends at the Moody home. A musical tribute featured the Forest Hill band, Mrs. Camfield at the piano, and Leanna Belle Camfield on violin. Gifts included a five story birthday case and a leather chair. Moody shared anecdotes of boyhood and later life, with refreshments and a guessing contest won by Clarence Kress for guessing 1,019 beans. The event honored pioneer residents and concluded with good night wishes.

Heautifying the Alma Grain and Lumber Co grounds

The Alma Grain and Lumber Co yard is being beautified with a tree lawn along the wall planted with potted plants from the Bittner greenhouse and a border of scarlet geraniums. The area will be lit at night by incandescent lamps, painters work on woodwork, and other improvements enhance the mill premises in Michigan.

Mangus On Way To Brainerd Hospital For Appendicitis

Bert Maneus, a popular rural delivery carrier on route number one, was taken to Brainerd hospital Monday forenoon and operated upon for appendicitis. He had not felt well for days but completed his route Saturday. Sunday his condition worsened and a doctor advised immediate operation. The appendix was found to be in an advanced state. Friends hope the operation proves successful and Mangus recovers promptly.

Entertained At Dr Day's After Field Meet

High school girls hosted a reception for the young men who took part in the Field Meet held the previous Friday. The lawn glowed with Japanese lanterns and scattered cushions and rugs. Games, refreshments, and cheerful pride marked the evening as the hosts celebrated the day's achievements.

Local Church Service Reflects on Our Nation

About fifty members of GAR, G A M E and W R C attended Sunday services at the Methodist church in the city. Rev Wolfe spoke on Our Nation, delivering a thoughtful address that avoided references to aging old soldiers. Grace Crawford and Mrs Lou Convis were noted for their past support of the G A R.

Landscape art plans beautify Alma High School grounds

Sometime since O C Simonds, the Chicago landscape artist, visited Alma and met the school board to inspect the grounds beside the high school. Blue prints show shrub and vine placements for best effect with Indian currants, spiraeas, Virginia creepers, Dewberry bushes, and willow varieties. The Alma grounds, along Pine River, are praised and the board commended for beautifying the site for students.

Prank at College Chapel Delays Freshman Exhibit

College sophomores rigged the chapel lighting during a freshman exhibition. The lights failed after the socket was found stuffed with paper when a lamp was unscrewed. Investigations traced the issue to deliberate tampering, blamed on the sophomores if not detected.

Draggists Organize in Gratiot County Meeting

Draggists from Ithaca St Louis Pompeii Breckenridge Ashley Perrinton North Star and Alma attended a meeting at the Wright House parlors yesterday afternoon. Bert Cravetora of Ithaca was elected president Roy Cowdrey of Ithaca secretary and J D Gilleo of Pompeii treasurer of the Gratiot county druggists association which organized at that gathering.

Mrs J T Watt Former Alma Resident Dies in Ohio

Former Alma resident Mrs J T Watt died at her home in Chicago Junction Ohio last Tuesday after a period of illness. The funeral was held Thursday and she had recently been in Cleveland hospital where her ailments were deemed incurable. She died within twenty four hours of returning home. She leaves a husband and two children along with many friends who mourn her.
