Alma paid tribute to its honored dead and to Ammi W Wright’s legacy with a memorial monument unveiled at Wright Park. Mrs Sarah Lancashire and family, plus city leaders, celebrated the 12-foot granite monument and the Wright Park gift that funded Alma College and local institutions. Memorial day activities followed at the Strand theatre with remarks urging continued patriotism and unity as World War veterans and families reflected on sacrifice.

The Alma High School graduating class this year will be the largest in history with 66 seniors. Commencement week opens June 18 at the Methodist Episcopal church with Rev. M. W. Drowned at Crystal on Memorial Day
Lewis Bouchey an 18 year old Ithaca high school student drowned at Crystal lake during the Memorial Day picnic. He swam from a boat with three girls when cramps likely struck after overheating from rowing. Despite aid and a city motor boat, his body had not been recovered by evening.

The body of George Wallighan son of farmer Adolph Wallighan was found in the river near St. Louis between 10 and 11 am. Foul play is suspected as autopsy and coroner’s jury proceed, with next Tuesday set for further evidence. The Ladies Guild of St Johns church holds a June meeting with Mrs. Ralph Wagner.

Baby Killed by Auto On Sunday At Ithaca Farm
Donald Foster aged one, son of Mr and Mrs Bryan Foster, was killed when an automobile backed over him in the Poster door yard near Ithaca Sunday. The car belonged to Roscoe Cowdrey, who stopped nearby chatting with others as the child crawled under it. The Fosters have moved from Alma to Newark township and then to the Cowdrey farm. A piano lesson notice for Misa Nora Brader at Durkee’s Piano Store was also listed.

Early Citizens Army Camp Offers Three Training Courses
War Department data shows Camp Custer Michigan will accept applications between August 2 and September 2 with a June 40 deadline. Red White and Blue courses will run concurrently offering progressively advanced training for men aged 17 to 27 non veterans, plus a 35 year cap for those with prior service. Applicants must show leadership, good character and meet education requirements from grammar to high school depending on course.

Alma College Receives $50000 Gift From Mrs Lancashire
President H M Crooks of Alma College announced by telephone from Detroit that Mrs Sarah H Lancashire of New York has donated 50000 to Alma College this week. The gift is the largest to the endowment drive and brings total pledges to 590500, with about 120000 still needed to reach the goal.

League to hold June session at Republic school
In accordance with a precedent the League will meet Friday June 2 at 3 p.m. at Republic school. May and June meetings attract many local women who cannot attend when in the western section. Reports on political conditions and candidates for election will follow. Fordney will be represented. The League with the Child Conservation League plans supervisors for Alma City Park Play Ground. Well Known Veteran Eugene Brant Dies at 78
Eugene Brant a longtime resident of the city since 1880 died at his home on Thursday evening May 25 after an illness of several days. He was 78. Born December 11, 1843 in Sandyville Ohio he served in the 48th Ohio Volunteers from 1861 to 1864 before re enlisting and later losing his sight. He married Arabell Irwin October 25 1868 and had two daughters Mrs William Snell of Alma and Mrs Bert Osborne of Perrinton. He leaves his wife two brothers six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The funeral was held Sunday at the family home with Rev C H Hull and Rev L Wood officiating. Civil War comrades attended and World War veterans served as pallbearers. Interment in Wright cemetery.

Michigan state health data show 11,000 divorce bills filed and about 22,000 handled in 1921 with 41,508 marriages and 7,632 divorces recorded. About 11,000 cases were pending on January 1 1921, 2 345 withdrawn and 832 contested. Wayne County led in marriages with 14 474 while Keweenaw County had the fewest.
