Three inmates overpowered the turnkey and escaped from the Gratiot County jail, slipping away to freedom in a quiet breakout. Police pursue leads as investigators review guards and security measures at the Bastile.
Harry Payne Frank Zimmer and Frank Taylor allegedly overpowered the jail turnkey and fled the county jail late Wednesday night. They were last seen near the jail in Alma and are believed to be hiding in woods with plans to cross into Canada. Details describe the assault at the lockup, the lamped corridor, and the ensuing manhunt.
A fifteen year old boy named Verne Rock collided with a horse and buggy seven miles northwest of Alma while fleeing a barking dog. He was dragged several rods and suffered serious injuries. Claude Watson and two other youths were thrown clear. Watson was only slightly hurt. The buggy and harness were damaged. Rock received treatment at Wm Latimer’s residence and was later returned home.
Detroit capitalists back an electric road from Ionia to Crystal with possible southward extension to Lake Odessa. Delegations from Mair Hub bardaton and Carson City met in Tonia to discuss the project. Crystal would be the terminus, though Howard City and Alma show optimism for further northern reach and local sugar factory support favors Alma.

The next teacher's examination will be held in the high school room Ithaca August 12 and 13 1909 beginning at 6 30 p m Certificates of all grades will be issued. Institute will be held at Ithaca the week beginning August 16. F Pree Commissioner of Schools
