Ithaca to Pave Main Streets Under New Ordinance

Ithaca adopts a paving ordinance for Canter and Pine River streets, detailing pavement from Jefferson to Elm and Pine River to the depot. It funds half the costs via abutting property owners and half from highway tax aid, with maintenance from the same source. The plan will be built in yearly sections starting with Center street between Pine River and Main. It prohibits private corporations from erecting or maintaining work on the streets after the ordinance takes effect.

Francis, son of Mr and Mrs Elmer Francis, injured his left forefinger when it was caught in a sprocket wheel at a metal shop Thursday. Dr McClinton attended and treated the wound, with prognosis for recovery pending careful care.

Church Improvements at Alma United Brethren Church

The Alma United Brethren church, organized in 1801 and re organized in 18, seeks funds to lift its mortgage and repair both church and parsonage. A $300 parsonage purchase in 2008 and a chain of donations pushed the project toward a $700 goal, with plans for painting, steps, belfry work, carpeting, furnace, and chimney rebuilding. Pastors Thomas Campbell through K. Clapp have served the charge.

A dispatch from Manitou Colorado reports £ O Wood of Flint MI the new Democratic national committeeman for Michigan and his son Stanford his wife and Mrs BV Stevens of Flint along with Mr Austin of Battle Creek had a near drowning when a cloudburst flooded the road overturning their auto They were swept by swift current until rescued and taken to Manitou by Michigan tourists nearby Mr and Mrs Nicholas Longworth and party escaped the storm arriving as the rescue was underway.

Death of George Whitaker in Washington Township

George Whitaker of Washington township died when lightning struck while he hauled hay Saturday. A bolt hit as the storm had passed, one horse was killed and a log broken after the rack was struck. Whitaker leaves a wife and five children and was insured for 1000 dollars. Funeral Tuesday at Stoddard School with Rev Ren Hayward officiating, interment at North Star cemetery.

A young man from Elm Hall was restrained by a robber who stole his money and then fled the scene. Local police are investigating the incident, seeking witnesses and reviewing nearby surveillance for leads.

Lou Hindenlang recounts being robbed of 34.02 by a Cedar Lake boy, 16, named William Matthews. deputies found the revolver and most of the money at a swamp near Edmore. Calvin Courter obituary notes long residence in Arcada area

Calvin Courter was born June 2, 1899 near Crooked Lake New York and died July 18 1908 at Arcada township Michigan after a brief illness. He married Clara Ann Munnee November 27 1949 and nine children were born to them with three deceased. Sumner rebuilds after fire with fireproof cement blocks

One year after Sumner village fire wiped out half the business district, the rebuilt section features cement block fireproof construction. About 15,000 to 18,000 dollars worth of new buildings have risen, including Tucker’s two story store, Cleveland’s cement block shop, West’s store, Button’s port office, Ayers’ new building, and a 1500 dollar cement barn. Judge rules tonica malt liquor in high profile Frankfort case

In Frankfort Indiana Judge William Ro Moore rules tonica a malt liquor and fines Bert Johns for selling without a license. The decision says tonica is intoxicating under state law and that selling it without a license violates the malt liquor prohibition. Engineer P. W. Keating submits designs for Shepherd water works and electric light plant. System includes two Alma engines, two 20 kV dynamos, 200000 gallon daily pump, 300000 gallon tank tower, four flowing wells, fire hydrants, shut offs, and planned city lighting with ten large arc lights and ten sixteen candle power incandescents.
