Michigan Will Pay The Piper For Timber Debauch
Washington July 20 Michigan's wood using industries are paying the economic piper for a quarter century timber debauch. Forest Service experts say fires and reckless cutting have depleted Michigan forests so they mainly supply fuel wood and minor products. High grade lumber for building auto and furniture industries is now imported from other states, totaling about a billion board feet annually including 400 million from the Gulf Coast and 180 million from the Pacific Northwest. Reforestation could end costly imports and restore Michigan's leadership in lumber.
