Alma marked Independence Day in a traditional fashion with a morning parade, an oration by Hon Geo E Nichols of Ithaca, and a lively afternoon of races and band music. A shower paused events then sunshine returned for the fat men's race won by Ithaca’s Wells, with Alma’s A J Hall close behind, and Wells also took the 100 yard dash.
The district held its annual meeting at the high school last Monday with Moderator J. W. Holmes presiding. Officers elected were J. F. Schwartz and J. M. Montigel to the board, Schwartz winning the first trustee seat and Montigel the second. A special meeting was planned to decide on funds for a new school site and cement walks. Also noted is the Michigan Beet Sugar industry tour by Secretary Bird, with Kalamazoo Beet Sugar Co. reporting 4000 acres under contract and plans for larger crop output.
The Breckenridge band praised for uniforms and charm while the Almy Band entertained at eight. An Modern Woodmen drill from Ithaca and Alma camps drew praise for precision in red uniforms. Fireworks and pageantry topped a day that drew over 15,000, with four arrests noted for disorder. Event sites at Park Place reported the finest show yet in the state.
