Enthusiasm ran high all over the country as Tre Nations birth was celebrated with wide turnout and gatherings. Reported large crowds and extensive powder display associated with the event, marking a period of national pride and public festivity.
The Gratiot county Fourth of July celebration drew a large crowd with Alma band music and strong turnout. Alma farmers and workers funded and supervised ten miles of gravelling from Shanks corners toward Wheat, under veteran road builder W. Johnson who used dynamite to level hills and a custom chute to speed gravel loading.
A rural road upgrade near Alma Mich mobilized heavy local effort with two teams scraping gravel into the shovel mouth and loading wagons. About 200 days of labor were donated by farmers, though one resident Clark Burt refused to move fences. The project drained and benefited nearby farms, though some neighbors opposed the expenditure. Uncalled for letters listed include PF L Earnest and several Mrs. and Mr. names.
