Miss Letta Soper wed Floyd W. Maxwell in a morning home ceremony attended by out of town guests. Rev. Wm. H. Mason officiated as Leon Stinchcomb sang and Harold Miller played. A three course breakfast followed at the Stinchcomb home before the couple departed for Mt. Pleasant and a northern resort stay, returning August 1 to settle in Alma. Maxwell, a city schools manual training teacher, and his bride, a respected Alma graduate, are praised by friends.

Storm damages farms and towns across several counties
The Saturday afternoon storm, though not cyclonic, caused extensive damage in multiple townships. Arthur Dibble’s 40 by 0 barn in North Star township was demolished, James Gibb’s barn and a large silo in Wheeler were lost, trees uprooted and fences levelled. In Eaton county the storm cut an 80 rod wide swath, and lightning in Charlotte Ches ning and nearby cities sparked fires in several buildings.

Gratiot County Honored At State Firemen Meeting
Gratiot County treasurer A. P. Lane was re elected secretary and treasurer of the state firemen association at the recent Saginaw gathering. Alderman George H. Peery left for Kamans City Missouri to lead the Republic Motor Truck Company agency there, accompanied by his son Harold. Mrs Gertrude Dodge, formerly Alma teacher now in Holland, visited in town en route to Pompeii for two weeks. Miss Dortee plans a California trip soon with her mother.

L A Sharp Attends Eastern Reunion And Baptist Convention
L A Sharp returned from a three week eastern trip covering June at Union University in Schenectady for the fortieth reunion of the class of 1874. He notes many classmates present including nineteen from 1864 and five from the Civil War era. He led the alumni parade as grand marshal before proceeding to Boston for the National Northern Baptist Association convention June 16 to 23.

The Lansing report notes Attorney General Fellows rules no appeal from June county equalization figures to the state tax commission. Lightn Work Strikes Vestaburg Area Barns and Church
Over two years lightning has spared Montcalm county until last Saturday when two large barns owned by Ira Evans and Zach Palmer and the Church of God building were struck. Tra Evans, Frank Struble of Alma, and a son-in-law were stunned by the strike that hit the Evans barn. Evans remained unconscious for hours. Damages at each site were minor, under twenty five dollars, though the event caused great danger. A year ago the Robison barn near Vestaburg burned with its crops after a strike on a new barn under construction.

Man suffers broken ankle in Grant Avenue cave-in

Brainerd Hospital Hosts County Medical Society Session
The County Medical Society met at Brainerd hospital for an afternoon program led by Dr. Brooks of Detroit on “Thiritle Diseases” with eight clinical patients. Dr. Faust of Ithaca opposed proprietary medicines while Dr. Crane of Ashley described a pleural abscess case. A banquet followed. a vote praised the meeting, and a new plan for monthly gatherings was announced.

State papers report a $100 salary cut for Postmaster W. P. Cash. The Alma post office’s 1914 year showed reduced receipts, blamed on two firms mailing less printed matter. If recent gains persist, Cash could receive a higher salary starting July 1915.

Narrow escape after sudden deal on Superior street
J R Bateman and Robert Duckworth escaped injury when a Republic motor truck testing a track startled frightened horses pulling a high box wagon. The wagon toppled into a 15 foot embankment, Bateman landed in a barbed wire fence, and horses destroyed posts and bicycle rack before being halted. Both men bruised but alive. wagon box and hitching gear damaged.
