Delegates Fill General Conference of Methodists

In Baltimore the General Conference drew 808 laymen 44 ministers and 85 others with 25 Indies among delegates. Bishop Thoburn retires to his homeland as Chen Wei Chang the North China advocate of gospel gains liberty to preach. Jospeh Hingley elected secretary and committees organize around 15 church units.

Two Fires Saturday Notify Spectator Fire Department Response

Two fires Saturday morning attracted onlookers as the first started at J R Campbell residence on Went Superior Street from a defective kitchen chimney and spread to the front. Firefighters contained the blaze quickly and furniture moved to the street with about 150 dollars in damages. The second blaze occurred at Roy Thornton’s Alma Heights Grover Avenue from another faulty chimney. While firemen were finishing the first job the alarm for a second fire arrived and after a 20 minute start the flames were put out with minor damage. the house can be repaired for around 200 dollars.

Doctor of Divinity Honors For Alma Minister

The commencement at Albion College honored Kev. French with the Doctor of Divinity degree. President Dickie telephoned French to confirm attendance and expected him on the platform. The degree was conferred by unanimous vote of the faculty and board, reflecting long career as a minister.

Postoffice Clerks Get Pay Raises Confirmed

Postmaster F Brown secured pay raises for several local post office clerks. J L Brown rises to 1000, Sarah Me Namara to 900, James Krom to 800, Frank Parker to 800, with city carriers Hollenbeck Porter and Callahan each gaining 200 annually, effective after July first.

Krentel Pringle Nuptials In Alma At Noon

In Alma, Clara Pringle and A B Krentel were joined in marriage by Rev Clizbe at high noon yesterday. The bride, three years with Central Michigan Produce Co as secretary to the general manager, and the groom, a chemist at Michigan Sugar Co Alma, were celebrated among immediate family and friends. After a wedding dinner they left for southern Michigan and will reside after September first at G W Pringle residence Pine and East Downey streets.

Woodmen of America Head Camp Delegates Return From Peoria

Oden Hoke J. Puller reports the fifteenth head camp of Modern Woodmen of America held in Peoria with thousands of visiting Woodmen and a grand Woodman Game spectacle. The event showcased the organization’s growth from twenty one members twenty-five years ago to over one million under its Great Camp with fraternal and insurance roles. The Alma Camp 142 delegation, led by Puller, praised Peoria’s hospitality and the camp elected officers for the next two years while noting the local Woodmen roster and leadership.

Alma man builds fortunes from pioneer roots

William T Naldrett, vice president and general manager of Alma Grain and Lumber, rose from farming in Fulton and Middleton to lead a growing Michigan firm. Born January 6, 1900 in Alma, his career spans Ithaca, Merrill, and St Johns before joining Alma. He is active in Gratiot county farms, Ithaca National Bank, and is a respected Alma citizen.
