Disastrous Riverdale Fire Destroys Stores and Livery

A Sunday blaze in Riverdale gutted Keys store room and building, with goods worth about 1000 destroyed. Stronge’s Livery Barn, blacksmith shop, and five stalls suffered total loss, including hay, corn, and harnesses. Insurances ranged from 500 to 41000, with key owners planning rebuilds and lodge rooms looted. Riverdale faces ongoing hardship as fires strike again.

Gates and a gateman lead to new train rule change

The D G & W lines began safety gate exits on the 10th, with a single gateman per train and the parlor car porter as gate keeper. Passengers in coaches must enter and exit through the same gateway, tickets inspected by the gateman, longer station stops likely, and tickets must be shown to gatekeeper before boarding. Conductor acceptance based on contract and rules. tickets honored only on trains listed to stop.

Cuban Relief drive urged by state governors

The National Cuban Relief Committee asks state governors to appoint resident agents to raise relief funds in towns. Governor Pingree has named A. W. Wright in Michigan as a Cuban Relief Committee agent. Wright led efforts with 100 and local citizens and business leaders contributed. Bert Woodward oversees collecting contributions.

Installations Highlight Social Night of Maton Sir Knights

Maton, The Sir Knight and Ladies of the Maccabees hosted a social evening with officers of Tent and Hive being installed. Louise A. Turck served as Installing Ca ller, escorted by Lady Mar irutha Leonard and Sir Knight platoons. Other installations followed with various officers named, followed by an Oyster supper and socializing with guests from Crest Hill, St. Louis, and beyond. In other news, Mrs Harriet Grandy, wife of W H Grandy and mother of Frank J Grandy, died in Los Angeles January 15 1906. Funeral held at Fifty fourth and McKinley avenue residence, with remains laid at Rosedale cemetery.

A Hop Time at the Wright House Aeolian Dancing Club

The Aeolian Dancing Club held its first meeting in the Wright House dining room last Friday. Thirty two members joined and the group elected officers Jacob Hirschkowitz president O J Miller vice president and Harry Fink secretary and treasurer. Fortnightly meetings will be held on Wednesdays with venue to be decided.

A Practical Talk at M B Church and Local Notices

Dr Pringle gave a practical talk at the M B church on Sunday evening urging Epworth League members to support the superintendent, work in harmony, and aid with money and attendance. Also notices include custom sawing and grinding at Miller & Coleman Elwell, a new bakery and restaurant by Arnold Dillichausen, an by law change for the Building Loan Association, sale of a 40 acre Alma farm, and Kipp selling pure milk daily.
