Farmers Institute Echoes a Century of County Progress

The annual Farmers Institute in Alma and Gratiot County wrapped up with speeches from W T Pitt and M J Dean, marking fifty years since county organization and celebrating infrastructure gains and agricultural education. Leaders urged joining Grange or Farmers Clubs, discussed soil, crops, fertilizer, and best practices, and a Friday session featured poultry, sugar beets, dairy herd care, and fruit tree Pest control strategies.

Alma Roller Mills installed a Halsted Feed Grinder at a cost of several hundred dollars. The 80 to 100 bushels per hour grinder can grind clear outs as well as corn and handles coarse medium or fine grinds. It has proved a desirable addition to the mill machinery.

Committee Appointments Highlight Senate and House Assignments

The president of the Senate on Wednesday named the committee for the coming year and Senator Kly drew the chair on Roads and Bridges with assignments on Agriculture Elections Michigan Reformatory Railroads and Religious and Benevolent Societies. Representative Chambers will serve on Constitutional Convention Elections Home for Feeble Minded and Schools for the Blind.

Gratiot County Treasurers Bond Battle Sparks Action

A legislative visit to the County Treasurer's Ithaca office shows Fred E. Smith still in control of county funds while Treasurer elect H. R. Munson has taken oath. Munson's $40,000 bond was rejected. supervisors seek a surety bond and bids from banks offering 3 percent interest for county money. A second resolution asks Gratiot legislators to push a law embodying these provisions, with a three member committee to pursue the bill.

Bond Report Questioning County Treasurer Munson in Gratiot County

The county officers committee reports that Munson’s proposed bond is signed by fourteen bank stockholders who hold public funds and benefit from them without interest. It states the bond ignores board resolutions mandating a surety company bond and claims the banks will gain from future use of funds. The report condemns the personal bond as insufficient and aligned with a prearranged agreement with sureties.

George King Improving at Wright House Recovery

George King of Grand Rapids, once ill with pneumonia at the Wright House, is slowly recovering. His wife arrived that day and no complications are reported. He expects to be taken home Saturday. Mr. King previously bought horses in this area for several years and was here on that business when taken ill.

Mr J M Montigel hosted Alma Hive No 45 1 C T M last Wednesday in January with gates and music. Refreshments were served and Mesdames Shepherd and Day won the prize for best thinkers. They returned home voting Mrs M loyal hostess Nest. Next meeting at Mrs Shepherd’s on Wednesday evening January 20.

Riverdale teacher and student drown after ice breaks

On a Riverdale river last Friday morning Harry Valance age 14 fell through thin ice while skating with a companion. Elbert W. Gibson a 40 year old teacher from Michigan attempted rescue but both died. Gibson's funeral drew countywide attendance with religious and civic groups present.

Governor Warner Rejoins Michigan Post Amid Oath

Governor Fred M. Warner was sworn in for a second term at his Farmington home due to illness. He spoke without a prepared address and pledged to do the right thing, signed the document, and kissed his daughter Helen as onlookers observed the solemn ceremony.

Golden Wedding at Forest Hill Fifty Years of Unity

A large gathering celebrated Mr and Mrs Wana Faulkner of Forest Hill on New Year’s day marking fifty years of marriage. They had no children of their own but helped raise five, migrated from Ireland, settled in Gratiot county, and built two farms. They joined the Church of Christ forty years ago and remain active. An Elder H Russell from St Louis spoke on American progress, followed by a thoughtful address. Provisions and a purse of 17 dollars were given by friends as a token of respect for the couple.

Last Friday's skating party marked the end of one era as new recreation arises. Prof. Roth challenged students to think critically about forestry during a chapel talk. A basketball game between the Commercials and the Academy drew enthusiasm. Miss Glenn boosted foreign missions, inspiring P. J. Allured, Allen McFadden, and Blake McDonald to join volunteer work abroad. Merman Morse prepares for Rhodes Scholarships exams in Ann Arbor after holidays. Alma College Couple Frank Angell and Agnes Burnet Wed

A Detroit Journal dispatch dated January 14 reports Alma College natives Frank Angell and Agnes Burnet married in Aurora Illinois on New Year’s day. Angell, popular athlete last year, starred in football baseball and heavyweight wrestling and recently became county secretary for Allegan Y M C A. Burnet, a kindergarten graduate, has taught in Towns City for two years. Home for Angell is Adrian.
