Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Holds Annual Meeting at St Johns

The Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Clinton and Gratiot counties met at the Courthouse in St Johns with about fifty members. President George N. Ferrey presided as secretary Charles B. Giffels reported gains in membership and insured property, noting 7,209 members at end of 1905 and a net gain of 350 that year, with policies increasing to 11,159,843 dollars in coverage. Treasury rose to 1,941.54 dollars, while total disbursements reached 20,744.54 dollars and two losses totalling 755.2 dollars were awaiting payment. The history traced the company back to 1863, growth through the decades, and notable losses in Gratiot and Hath counties. A by-law on gasoline use was approved, and officers were re-elected: President Ferrey, vice president W. T. Pitt, secretary-treasurer C. B. Giffels, with directors W. C. Mallory and Jesse Pepple re-elected. The secretary’s salary was set at a prior amount.

Bath man seeks arbitration over Knapp barn loss

C J Chapman proposed a board of arbitration to reexamine the June windstorm damage that demolished D W Knapp s barn. Knapp disputes the adjusters report claiming lightning while insurer officers cite a wind blow down. No arbitration committee was formed before adjournment.

Clarence Defoe visited friends in Mt Pleasant last week. Miss Irene Barns is ill with appendicitis. A minor disturbance occurred on the third floor corridor of Pioneer Hall, ending amicably. A clothes line with garments appeared in Wright Hall, halted before chapel. Twenty youths enjoyed a gathering at Mr Murphy’s home with refreshments. Miss Bessie Kellogg hosted another party with games and humor. A seven-student mixed group plans a conservatory performance at Caro and Cass City under local high school auspices. Maynard Cook and Herman Morse returned for Rhodes scholarship exams. results expected later with optimism.

Cecil Rhodes Scholarship Examinations Held in University Hall

An Ann Arbor dispatch reports Cecil Rhodes scholarship exams at University Hall for Oxford. Fifteen students sit the papers sent to Oxford. standings and results go to President Angell and the Michigan district committee to select the best suited candidate. The stipend is 99 pounds yearly for maintenance and travel. Alma is represented by Maynard Cook and Herman Moree. verdicts awaited by many local friends.

A Pretty Wedding at St Louis Church Parsonage

Leo Wood and Miss Clara Wilson wed in Forest Hill with Rev H E Russell performing the ceremony. Attendants Mr Chas Leland and Miss Mabelle Witton witnessed. The couple, popular locals, will reside in Alta for now.

Supervisors Win First Bout in Bond Challenge

Judge Wisner, for Judge Searls, ruled the Board of Supervisors acted on bond and disapproved it in the hearing led by John T. Matthews Geo P. Stone and Everden with BE Lyon and Frank Monforth presenting evidence for Munson bond. Lyons suggested mandamus but Wisner indicated opposition to such action. The Board appears to have won the first bout.

NEW P. O. FIXTURES FOR ALMA POST OFFICE

Mr. Guy T Gould of Chicago inspected Alma post office facilities and condemned current fixtures. Postmaster Brown was told to select a new outfit and bids were requested for a ten year lease on five possible locations for a future free delivery post office. Brown says the updated post office will be second to none in a city twice Alma’s size and will focus on patron interests.

Ten Wrecks In One Day Across The Nation

Ten railroad wrecks were reported across the country in a single day with at least one fatality in several incidents. Notable crashes included the Big Four near Fowler Indiana and multiple lines such as Rock Island, Santa Fe, New Orleans & North Western, Lake Shore, Indiana Harbor Rail, and Grand Rapids & Indiana. Wrecks caused many injuries and a few deaths.

Michigan county boards empowered to designate depositories for public funds

Death of Mrs Mary Jane Martin at age 64

Mary Jane Martin died at her daughter Mrs Robert Butterfield home on State Street from acute enteritis. Born in Washtenaw County in 1828, she married Andrew J Martin in Ann Arbor in 1885 and lived there until his death in 1875. She later moved to Fowlerville and then resided with her daughter. Sympathy extends to her son and daughter. Also noted is injury to Geo Lake after a wagon accident at Naldrett's lumber yard.
