Alma plant ends beet campaign after record tonnage

The Alma Michigan Sugar plant completed its annual campaign with 78 000 tons of beets processed and over 21 500 000 pounds of sugar produced. The run began October 2 and ran at near capacity, with a peak of 1 558 tons sliced in one day, marking the largest daily beet slice in twenty four hours. Further data on wages, farmer payments, and costs will be released when available.

Free tuberculosis clinic planned in Alma January 30

The Michigan Anti Tuberculosis Association schedules a free clinic in Alma on January 30 and 21 with Dr E R Van tnmthal of the state association directing efforts. Funeral held today with many fire departments attending, including local chief J F Sartor Jr and Alma's Karl Adams. Lane left a wife and one son. he had been in the insurance business. Mrs Lane is gravely ill at home.

Alma Athletic club to stage wrestling opener January 22

The Alma Athletic club announces an opening wrestling show at the Alma roller skating rink on January 22 featuring top rivals Stunlas and Saroski against Femby of Alma. Alma Creamery man dies. long local resident

George Myron Hutchinson longtime Alma creamery manager and janitor of ward and high school buildings died Saturday January 4 1918 at his Park avenue home after weeks of illness. He was born September 15 1847 Fenner New York married Mary Block in 1860 with four children two of whom died in infancy. He moved with his family to Alma in 1886 later worked in Rochester Indiana before returning to Alma. He leaves his wife two children Louis H and Mrs Plog three grandchildren two brothers and one sister.

Mother Reunites with Son Amid Laporte Jail Crisis

Mrs. M. fb. Finder of Elwell travels to Laporte Indiana on New Year’s night to find her fourteen year old son Victor in jail. He is described as a self confessed hold up man. An ex convict Jimmy Taylor allegedly drew them into crime. They are said to have beaten Mort Hutchinson owner of a Laporte soft drink shop and robbed his safe before police detained them.

Free Methodist conference meets in city this week

The Ionia district quarterly conference of the Free Methodist church began today in this city with services at 10:00 a.m. and 7:40 p.m. daily.
