Brennan Is Found Not Guilty In Alma Murder Case

After two hours of juror deliberation on Monday, the Brennan jury returned a not guilty verdict in the murder of Beatrice Epler, the 16 year old Alma girl found on Grover avenue. Judge Maine instructed that verdicts could be only not guilty or first degree murder, and Brennan left court a free man after four years in prison. The trial featured Brennan denying involvement in the Gilson home, with testimony from Mrs. Gilson and others debated by prosecutors and the defense.

Pocketbook Grabbed From Girl on Alma Street

A purse was snatched from Mine Udelle on Wright avenue after she left the depot Tuesday night. Two unknown men followed her from the depot toward Superior street. one seized the pocketbook as she walked with a companion. About ten dollars and papers were taken. the men fled toward the railroad tracks. Police inquiry continues.

Alma College Trustee Dies After Nervous Breakdown

William Winton longtime Alma College trustee and former Gratiot County lad died at 61 in Verona New Jersey after long illness. A Ithaca native he graduated from Ithaca High School and Alma College in 1904 later serving as superintendent of agencies for Mutual Life Insurance Newark. Surviving are his widow and several children. the record notes his deep ties to Alma College endowment and curriculum committees.

Night classes to start January 6 at local night school

Monday evening classes will be offered at the night school with English French shorthand bookkeeping and typewriting. Any two subjects may be pursued by each student. Tuition is 2.40 per month. The program follows an October start with 40 enrolled but low attendance recently.

A utility announces a request to raise telephone rates to six classes across Michigan excluding Detroit. Alma is in the third group with 541 to 10,000 population. Business line would cost 36 dollars annually, residential 24 dollars, up from current 18 and 12 dollars respectively. Farmers lines also affected, drawing business reaction from local merchants who doubt the need for such a large increase.
