Defense seeks venue change in Eichorn murder case

A motion for change of venue was filed in circuit court by defense attorney Charles H Goggin citing prejudicial rumors and public sentiment in Gratiot county. He argued newspapers and interviews have biased the community, making a fair trial unlikely, and noted the cost of local juries. Irene Wolfe Dies After Illness in Brainerd Hospital

Irene Wolfe head daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ely Wolfe was born January 3 190% in Arcada township and died February 24 after a long illness at Brainerd Hospital. A Alma High School student she joined First Baptist Church of Alma Welcht three years ago. Survived by parents and brothers Kendall Wilbur Alfred, the family and many friends mourn. Funeral held at Baptist church Tuesday conducted by Rev J W Priest with Rev 4 Frank Jackson assisting. Firemen's Ball Draws Big Crowd At Masonic Home

The annual firemen's ball at the Masonic home last Friday evening attracted a large turnout despite competing basketball games and lectures. The event netted about $250, split evenly between the firemen and Alma Red Cross, with Red Cross ladies organizing ticket sales boosting the proceeds to roughly $125 for yarns and wartime relief.

Will Retain Old Location for Alma Store Opening

The LD W Robinson department store on State street in Alma will open to the public either Saturday or early next week after ongoing preparations. The store aims to be the finest in the region with dustproof ready to wear cabinets, extensive millinery, and about three thousand shoe pairs, plus updated lighting, a public toilet, and large display windows. May Jones will head the millinery with Gage Brothers supervising hats. Henry Murray will run the shoe department.

Will Hold Contest High School Oratorical and Declamation

The annual high school oratorical and declamation contest will be held Friday evening at Alma High School. It determines Alma's representative for the sub district contest in April at Alma. Twenty Star Service Flag at Methodist church

A beutiful service flag donated in honor of nineteen or twenty young men from the congregation who entered service in the present war will be unfurled at the Methodist Episcopal church next Sunday evening at seven thirty. Old Resident Dead Elwin Griffin Veteran Civil War

Elwin Griffin longtime city resident and Civil War veteran died Friday at age 78. Born in London October 12 1838 he moved with his parents to Bridgeport New York then Hillsdale Michigan later Allegan where he learned to mine. He served in Company B 19th Infantry and fought in the Civil War. He married Harriet Russel Chaye who died in 1808 and left one child Winnie. Survived by Augusta Avrait Mina Griffin and Mire J. Paquette plus four sisters and a brother. Funeral was at his Woodworth Avenue home with Rev Masui presiding. floral tributes noted the respect and esteem for him.

Gas rate hike proposed for spring election

The Alma Ithaca St Louis and Breckenridge gas rate proposal will go to voters after a Monday council meeting. A 15 cent per thousand feet increase is planned to help the gas company continue operations until conditions normalize. Councils from the four cities will meet to align details before the April vote.
