Death of Seth Tubbs Alma Resident Noted Citizen
Seth Tubbs died at his State street home on Thursday after years of heart trouble and Bright’s disease. Born January 6, 1872 in Ontario County New York, he moved to Alma thirty years ago with his parents. He worked in Lansing as private secretary to the auditor general, then ran Tubbs Brother Dairy in Alma. He belonged to First Presbyterian church and to Masonic and Knights of Pythias orders. Survived by his wife Nellie Fortner Tubbs, three children, a sister and a brother. Funeral services were held at the home and at the First Presbyterian Church. Burt Sharrar and Moore announce an immigrant train of twenty eight cars from Illinois to Alma on February 26 and 27 carrying households farming implements and livestock for about thirty farmers who purchased farms in Gratiot county. The party will be led by Pete Marquette railroad’s general passenger agent and Burt president of the land company. Some farmers will relocate to Elwell Alma St. Louis Breckenridge and Wheeler with new arrivals already settling in. The firm is described as the largest Michigan real estate concern with a western office in Urbana Illinois and millions in business over six years. Citizens are urged to give a cordial welcome.

Civil War veteran and long time Gratiot County treasurer Wilbur Nelson died at his Ithaca home Thursday at age seventy six after a brief illness and a stormy period of illness. He was born in Madison, Lenawee County in 1810 and moved to Arcada Township as a youth. He served in civic and business life, contributing to local politics and the community.

He served in the 8th Michigan Infantry and the 102nd U.S. Colored Infantry, rising to captain and taking part in battles including Fredericksburg. He led the Nelson Grain company, held Gratiot and Isabella county offices, and is survived by wife Mary Hamilton and six children. Funeral at First Baptist Church Ithaca with county officers in attendance.

Drunken St. Louis Man Arrested After Home Clash
Robert Tedhamus of St. Louis was arrested by Constable Daggart in Wheeler after a drunken spree at Merrill. He drove his parents from their home with a club and threatened the officer with a sledge hammer. He was taken to Almia and then Ithaca by Daggart and Under-sheriff Lewis. Tedhamus had a bad reputation in St. Louis for drunkenness.

Modern Selling Erected on Edwardes Hotel Site
The old Edwardes Hotel in Alma, a pioneer structure since 1872, was sold in three parcels at auction. It will be razed and replaced by a two story brick building by the Merchants' Building association. The site will host a double store on the first floor and offices above.
