Committees from Alma College and the Board of Trade push a four day drive for an endowment, with pledges reportedly reaching into the thousands. Notable gifts include 6000 from Dr Jay Crisbee and 1000 from L A Sharp, as locals rally to hit the $50,000 target by Saturday night.
The post office will be closed on Thursday February 22 for a mail distribution pause. Carriers will be hired to perform deliveries that day. The office will reopen to resume standard mail distribution outside the specified hours of 1000 until further notice.
Francis King a well known Alma resident and Alma College trustee will pledge eighty thousand dollars to the endowment campaign ending at commencement in June with twenty one dollars and each one dollar gift matched by one dollar during the four month period. The letter made public Monday limits personal liability to four thousand dollars but efforts will likely raise the gift to meet the endowment goal. The drive aims to match every thirty nine dollars raised up to fifty thousand dollars.
The State Normal team defeated Alma in a hard played game marked by roughness and injuries. George W. Hulse a resident of Euclid avenue died at home following injuries from an automobile collision on February 4 when he stepped into the path of another car after slipping on a slick sidewalk He was 61 and survived by a wife four children and his parents The funeral was held the following Monday with Rev T G Brownlow officiating
Water Commissioner Parker reports about forty five meters broken during Sunday night’s severe freeze with many more both meters and pipes freezing citywide. Residents note pipes sweating under heat loss and an old remedy of tar and paraffin mixed while hot to prevent freezing, applied to pipes and meters and kept dry.
A public school teachers reception was hosted by the Frances Wile Union at Mee A. Hy Olmeteid hall.
