Fire wipes out Alma home. damage over six thousand

Firefighters from Alma answered a blaze at Simon Messinger’s South State street home Saturday afternoon. Flames roared through the south gable roof, damaging walls and interior, with water damage soaking the house. Most belongings were moved out, though some bedroom furniture perished. Damage is estimated at no less than 6,000 and may rise. Messinger plans swift rebuilding into a modern home once insurance is settled.

Alma to Build Large Four Story Addition to Wright House

Manager C V Calkins announced Mary Thearley owner of the lot adjoining the Wright House will fund a 120 by 60 foot addition to the hotel. The four story fireproof structure will attach to the current building adding ground floor stores and improved guest amenities including elevators and upgraded kitchens. Completion will cost over $50,000 and start this summer to create a leading hotel in Alma.

Lake Appointed Postmaster Assistant Succeeds Parker

Howard Lake of the Lake post office force has been appointed assistant postmaster effective February 1 on Postmaster Cash’s recommendation, replacing Frank O Parker who resigned to join First State Bank.
