Alma College endowment drive gains pledges and asks for more

Alma College moves toward an extended endowment campaign with pledges of 50 000 from the General Board of Education and 75 000 from the General Education Board conditional on raising the first half of the endowment fund. About 60 000 of the 900 000 fund has been raised, leaving 115 000 still to raise. Several named supporters assist in the drive as the college seeks to strengthen its standing among state institutions.

Died Wednesday in This City 84 Year Old Civil War Veteran

Calvin Cowles a long time resident died at the home of George Cowles on Mechanic Street Wednesday night December 22 at age 84 years five months He served in the Civil War as a member of the 12 Michigan Company F and belonged to the William Moyer Post His funeral was from George Cowles home on Friday December 24 with Rev Matt Duffey officiating Also notes two marriages in Charlevoix Mich and a wedding at the bride's home in this city with local officials and church members in attendance

Elks Hold Yuletide Dance at New Temple Hall

The Elks' Yuletide dance occurred Tuesday night at the East Superior street temple, the first in the new palae. About 150 young people attended as the hall and lighting were praised for their striking appeal. The eleven oclock toast and Elks orchestra provided music, with ample room on the second floor for dancing and favorable comments about the lodge and club room decor.

Community Christmas Tree Draws Hundreds for City Kids

The George W. Myers Post No 142 hosted a large community Christmas tree event on Friday evening with gifts for Alma's children. Carols filled the air as hundreds of kids lined State Street for candy, toys, and a visit from Santa. Local veterans and the Women’s Auxiliary organized the setup, while the First Baptist Sunday School presented a program titled The Song in the Sky. A World Wide Guild member died at fifteen, with funeral services held midweek. Dr Manning of Langville is slated to preach at the M E church Sunday at 11:00.

Local woman mourns as false telegram spooks family

Mrs Foward McLain of Midland faced renewed sorrow when a Brooklyn telegram claimed her son Leslie McLain but proved a hoax intended to extort $100. The family had already endured conflicting war department notices declaring Leslie dead or missing. Her son Herbert investigated the sender while officials later confirmed the hoax.

Installation Held Monday at Alma lodge No 244

A public installation of Alma lodge No 244 F and A M was held in the Masonic Temple with nearly three hundred Masons and guests in attendance. Officers for the coming year were installed led by Worshipful Master Orville Allen, as 126 members entered the lodge during the year. Rev Jackwon leaves Wooster Ohio after ten years as chaplain. Merrill Stuckey received the Past Master’s apron. festivities and a forthcoming Hobo banquet were announced with members urged to wear Hobo dress.

Hustlers Class Organizes Activities At Presbyterian Church

The Hustlers Class of the First Presbyterian Church led by Jack Eckles expands with an enrollment of twenty six and an attendance of twenty. Monthly meetings feature a stewing pot luck supper and a "weinle" roast followed by officer elections. The group divides into age based teams five teams strong to ensure broad training with planned games and future stars.

Three unidentified men burglarized Alma Elevator Home Lumber and Fuel Freight Depot and Brown Ward Coal office Sunday night. Windows were forced or jimmied. few changes were taken at Brown Ward and Ann Arbor freight offices, while Home Lumber & Fuel lost about three dollars from the till including Canadian coins. Footprints in snow indicate a trio active, with two suspects staying outside near Woodworth Avenue while one entered. The week old reports connect the incidents to the same three men and suggest the disturbances occurred during early night hours.
