Last Thursday the Vestaburg E Elevator burned to the ground with vast quantities of wheat and other grains stored inside. The loss will be in the thousands of dollars, with building machinery and grain all wrecked. The elevator was insured but likely not enough to cover the full damage, flames still burning earlier this week as workmen cleared the site. Arrangements set to continue business and begin construction of a new elevator at once, to be completed as soon as possible.
Fire last week heavily damaged the home of EB Parken on Hannah Avenue. Firefighters arrived promptly but the blaze had gained headway before containment. debris and ash scattered, with neighbors noting flames visible from the street as several rooms burned.
Alma led 18 to 7 after the first quarter and held on to beat Edmore 34 to 14 in a hard fought men’s basketball game. Howe Medler Stauffer and LaClear powered Alma with strong shooting while Campbell White guarded well. Referee Archer officiated as tensions flared but no injuries were reported.
A county Democratic Committee meeting at Wright House approved a January 1 banquet in Gratiot County to celebrate recent election wins. Speakers and details to be announced, with programs including minutes, roll call, music, and reports from state association. Sheriff Bradson announced a local arrest linked to a gambling case, with a three month jail sentence to follow.
Fine premiums attract visitors to the Flint area poultry show hosted by the Grillot County Paliley Association. The event runs through January 1, 1917, with prize awards to winners after judging by CLA Bloss of Flint. Miss Hertha McLaren of this city narrowly escaped being run over by an Ann Arbor passenger train Tuesday afternoon. A stranger at the depot leaped to her aid, pulling her from the track just before the engine reached her. The auxiliary impact caused a severe nervous shock, but she is believed not seriously injured.
Finnish immigrant Nethe, arriving with seven cents and one day of work, fell ill in Alma while seeking a hotel job. Taken to hospital by Mr Collins, he dies slowly as thoughts return to Finland. Alma lodge F and AM plans charity dances to aid his family.
