Muscle Shoals Nation's Bulwark Nitrate Plant of 60 Million
The Muscle Shoals ammonium nitrate plant at Muscle Shoals Alabama on the Tennessee River is highlighted as a national defense pillar. Built during World War I by Air Nitrates Corp with Westinghouse Kerr, JG White, and other firms, the facility could produce up to 300 tons of high explosives daily, supplying the U.S. amid wartime needs. The project cost about $60,000,000 and included a large steam power plant and city utilities, with long-term strategic value beyond the war.
