Fall Grains Can Use Soil Foods

Dr. M. M. McCool heads the soils department and urges fall fertilization for grains. Light soils need nitrogen and phosphorus, while heavy soils require phosphorus only. For light soils, a mix with two percent ammonia and twelve percent phosphoric acid at 250 pounds per acre is advised, plus early spring 100 pounds of soda and broadside application. Heavy soils benefit from phosphate and composted manure rather than nitrogen. In practice, 200 pounds of 12 percent phosphate or equivalent per acre is suggested, with 300–500 pounds sometimes profitable. Acid phosphate experiments on oats, wheat, and clover in southern Michigan summers showed yield boosts.
