Newberry case not an issue in Townsend campaign
Letter exchange between Hugh B MacCauley and Charles Evans Hughes clarifies that the Newberry case is not a campaign issue. The letters explain Supreme Court critique of the Michigan campaign expenditure ruling and emphasize the case’s factual basis and legal interpretation, with emphasis on spending limits rather than fraud or corruption.

Senator Newberry: Supreme Court reverses bribery ruling
The piece details the Newberry case, noting the trial court struck the fifth count for lack of evidence and the jury found not guilty on the sixth. The Supreme Court later held the statute unconstitutional as applied to primary campaigns, reversing the conviction and calling the trial misled by a grave misinterpretation of the law.
