Asphalt-Mastic Company awarded contract for street paving in Alma with funds earmarked for material and labor. City records show project anticipated to improve traffic surface and curb access, with completion targets set by municipal authorities.
Citizens consider asphalt paving from Prospect to Water streets at 1.50 per square yard with abutting owners paying 4 percent and the village covering the rest. Business leaders largely support the plan, while a few oppose or seek partial public funding, citing recent street work and costs. Local residents including W A Bahlke and H D Vermeulen express varying stances as community debate continues.
A Wright House banquet celebrated BK Mulholland leaving Alma for a new post in Minneapolis. Guests praised his friendship and wished success as he takes charge of the western branch of Alma Manufacturing Co. The event featured a formal banquet, toasts, and social games. Mulholland and family head to Minneapolis with many warm friends.
At Reed City the Democratic convention unanimously nominated Wm. A. Bahlke of Alma for Congress. Opponent is A. B. Darragh, a two term incumbent, with Darragh likely to win opposed by Bahlke who is a prominent Gratiot County lawyer and Democrat. Bahlke, 4% years old, child of German parents, has served in local posts and seeks the district.
The Gratiot County Pioneer Society announces the annual meeting will be delayed to mid September due to weather and related attractions. The committee will publish the exact date and program soon. A reader shares folk remedies for colds, praising Perry Davis Pain Killer as a quick home remedy.
The village council held a regular meeting Tuesday night approving a committee to confer with business leaders about paying for Superior street and to report at the next session. A commission for the fire team to attend the state fair at Pontiac was granted, and Chas Easlick was appointed nightwatch to replace Otis White. Several petitions were presented but no action taken. Conley Homes left for Lansing and Jackson for a weeks visit with friends and relatives.
