Ann Arbor to Use Part of Grand Trunk Depot at Durand
Dispatch from Durand reports an agreement allowing the Ann Arbor railroad to occupy part of the Grand Trunk union depot. Men are tearing up tracks on the southeast side while new lines and content walks are laid for efficiency. The Grand Trunk is to handle freight for both lines at this point. The old Ann Arbor depot will be demolished and a private park established by Grand Trunk.

School Opens September 4 Despite Labor Day Holiday
The school will begin on Tuesday September 4 with the bell ringing to mark the start of classes. Labor Day on September 3 will be observed as a legal holiday.
Missionary Pastor to Go to China from Albion Church
Reverend C. E. Scott of Albion's Presbyterian church plans departure for Tsing Tau China as mission pastor for the First Presbyterian Church of Detroit. He spoke in Detroit on Protestant duplication, urging more ministers for foreign fields. He and his wife and child will accompany him. Mrs Scott a Smith College graduate.

Death of J. J. Gaffney at Crystal Lake
Thomas Gaffney died Saturday at Crystal Lake after a six month illness of consumption. Born September 10 1467 in Sanilac, he moved to Alma and ran a saloon later taking over the business. Survived by wife and two sons John and Ruswell, plus parents three siblings and a number of relatives. Funeral services were held yesterday at home conducted by Rev G Brown with pallbearers from Hogles lodge and visitors from Saginaw Detroit and other towns.

City Council Votes on Sewer Plan for Fort Street
The city council met Tuesday night and handled many sidewalk petitions and claims. Only one item of note was debated a petition for a sewer on Fort Street. it was referred to the sewer committee for report at the next meeting.

Remarkable Eighty-Eighth Birthday of Early Gratiot Pioneer
William Wallace Norton, aged eighty eight, longtime Gratiot County pioneer, celebrated at his Howell home with family. Born in 1840, he helped supply stone for Lansing’s first capital, chopped Grand River boulders, and circulated furs and shingles as currency in Michigan frontiers. He moved to Isabella County in 1848, earned respect as a skilled axeman and rifleman, and earned the nickname Little Billy Norton for frontier shoot contests. His journeys included a California trip via Panama, returning to Alma in 1858 and aiding early supply transport between Grand Ledge and Alma.

A dispute over payment for chopping work leads to a curious trial of marksmanship. Fifty one rods were measured with a tree target. “Little Billy” hit within an inch of the bull while Norton missed the tree. Norton, despite age, remains active and observant, crediting total abstinence from drink and tobacco for vigor. his father and grandfather lived past 100, suggesting Norton may extend the family longevity.

Worden claimed beer came from Martin, Van Valkenberg alleged Brown sold it. Adjourned examination set for September 17 as lawyers seek more proof.

Alma Mining Co. in Idaho Eyes Copper Prospect near Mullan
Fred Willard of Mullan Idaho former Alia resident arrived to finance a copper mine on his claim group near Mullan capitalized at 1.5 million dollars. Stock selling at 10 cents a share with a planned rise to 25 cents after the first 10,000 shares. Mining in Idaho for seven years, Willard organized Alma Mining Co which controls a silver and lead proposition nearby. The mine is not yet a producer but signs point to a valuable ore body. A 24,000 foot tunnel has been driven into the mineral side with five men at work. another mine lies half a mile away on a group of claims near the Snow Storm mine. The region uses trenching and drift methods, with ore moved by tram cars. Swedes predominate in labor and racial prejudice against Chinese or Japanese persists. Willard plans to return west after selling stock to fund equipment, then push operations with outlook seen as promising based on neighboring properties.

Road to recovery for Street Commissioner Greig
