Indiana Court Rules Subscribers Must Pay For Newspapers

Kosciusko county Indiana circuit court awarded Northern Indians $2285 in a suit against William Duval for fifteen years of subscriptions. Duval admitted ordering the paper and taking it from the post office until December 1807 while stating he did not intend to pay. He produced only a four month receipt when testifying. The ruling holds that taking the paper from the post office constitutes receiving property and obligates payment. Costs totaled $50. The decision signals stronger collection action against nonpayers.
