July Slet Delavan of States Street dies after brief illness at home. Born September 5, 1834 in Watkins New York, she grew up in Jonesville Michigan where she excelled in languages and botany. A devout Episcopalian and lifelong gardener, she inspired many plantings and gardens, and was known for modesty, intellect, and charity. Her loss is deeply mourned by friends and community. Gilbert Genesta, proprietor of the Iepesta Theatre, plans to lease the entire Spinney block building starting January 15, enlarging the theatre and adding extensive improvements to make it the best in the state’s section. Two Gratiot figures mourned in separate deaths
Elizabeth Downing age 82 and Enos Kimmel a Civil War veteran, longtime Gratiot County residents, died within a week. Downing, born in Monroe Michigan, lived in Alma after marriage and was active in family and community life. Kimmel, age 78, served in the Civil War and left four children. Funeral details note Downing buried Riverside Cemetery and Kimmel at the same cemetery following services at the Methodist church. An upcoming Alma exhibition of an Actuelle phonograph with Detroit origins is announced by local dealer C. A. Smith, inviting public viewership.

The Republic defeated the Buckeye team 7 to 4 at Cleveland in a game billed as a showdown with strong pitching from Jones and Nelson. The American Railways Express company relocates its offices from the Redman building on Gratiot Avenue and the old Ann Arbor flight depot on Wright Avenue to new downtown facilities.
