Man Impersonating U.S. Detective Arrested in Bank Loss Case

Ross Cowles was arrested on a charge of impersonating an officer after posing as a U.S. detective in the Shepherd area. Officials say his claims about a missing $5,000 bank note case were false, and Chicago and local post office authorities move toward formal action. Cowles, about 35, single, has been linked to erroneous reports in state papers and previously resided in Alma with irregular work history.

Studio to Close for National Photographers Meet

The Horn Photographic Studio will close from August 7 to August 19 to allow Mr. and Mrs. F. Horn to attend the National Convention of the American Photographers Association at Niagara Falls. The St Louis gallery is now run by K C W Chandler of Nashville, while the Horns basing Alma. Patrons with unfinished work should complete it before August 7. The couple plans to return with new features at the State street studio.

Shower for Miss Bair in Honor of Kate Bair

Miss Sadie Messinger hosted a handkerchief shower this afternoon at her home for Miss Kate Bair whose marriage to H Norman Ronald occurs August 1. About 25 young ladies attended and each guest brought a handkerchief with a poem. Gifts were tied to a bouquet of sweet peas and presented to Miss Hart, who was surprised. A wedding-themed game and light refreshments followed.

Contract for Breakwater awarded to P D Struble

A special aldermanic committee awarded the retaining wall contract along State Street south of the dam to P D Struble for 46 dollars. The city furnishes all materials including stone, sand, gravel, cement, and iron piping. Struble must post a 300 dollar bond and complete per plans, under committee review led by Aldermen Cook, Hollenbeck, and Demuth.

Scoring Contest at Central Michigan Produce Plant

In a monthly scoring contest at the Central Michigan Produce Company plant last week, twenty entries of butter competed. Alma achieved a high score of 669, with only three creameries scoring higher. Thirty cheeses entered. the next contest will be held at the State fair.

Death of Wm McFaul in Alma

Wm McFaul aged fifty two died at his home in Alma on Sunday after a long illness due to typhoid fever. Born in Quebec he spent most of his life near Sumner with his people. Funeral at the Polywog schoolhouse at one o clock Tuesday with interment in Sumner cemetery. He leaves a wife two children and many relatives.

Youngest Civil War veteran Henry Wise carried a musket at fourteen

Henry Wise of Alma claims to be the youngest Federal Civil War soldier. Born January 1, 1856 in Ohio, he enlisted February 22, 1864 at Fostoria at age 14. He served through the war with Company G, 4th Ohio Infantry, took part in major campaigns, and later received a pension after records showed his true age. Wise says younger veterans exist but he remains convinced he is the youngest to have carried a musket.

Rural Free Delivery Patrons Free to Make Boxes

The Postmaster General issues an order effective today August 1 rescinding the requirement to buy mail boxes from two manufacturers offerings 390 styles costing 50 cents to 4 dollars. Patrons may build their own boxes meeting department standards and submit designs for district superintendent approval. It is too early to judge how the plan will work and many farmers may begin making their own boxes.

Alma College reports the Wright Hall boarding department spent 6200 for provisions with most purchases locally sourced. Wages totaled 2300, with one student wage. Two-year-old vegetable cellar holds 600 bushels, butter and milk costs noted, and meat, eggs, and produce quantities listed. Upgrades include a gas bakery, dough mixer, new boiler settings, and refurbishments to Wright Hall, Pioneer Hall, and the gym locker area.

William Rice Watson Dead Former Alma Resident

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports William Rice Watson, once a Alma resident, died at his family home on Belmont Avenue. A prominent real estate figure, he belonged to Lafayette Lodge No. 16 and the Eagles, and had spent the last decade in Seattle with his wife and daughter. Cremation is planned for Sunday afternoon with services at 2 o'clock at Bonney-Watson parlors.
