Board Elected 6 G Rhodes and school eligibility dispute

A prior annual school meeting raised the question of Vera Smith's eligibility as a board candidate due to tax status. Letters from Superintendent Kelley and the Michigan Attorney General indicate that a qualifying voter must have property assessed for school taxes, otherwise a vacancy may be filled by appointment. Death of an Old Pioneer Mrs Joslin at Alma

Mrs M C Joslin died at her Alma home last Friday after a long stomach cancer illness. Born in Ypsilanti in 1835 she married Nicholas Joslin at nineteen and moved to Seville township. Seven children born, five living. She later married Milton Twilliger and moved to Alma where she resided until death. Services were held at Free Methodist Church and body taken to Ypsilanti for burial.

C J Stilwell and wife from Ogden Utah are visiting relatives in Alma. Stilwell was ten years superintendent of the city schools here before moving to real estate in Ogden. He owns property there including houses and furnished flats and serves as an instructor at Ogden High.

Extensive repairs at the dam project wall and wings

A week of work has replaced timber dam abutments with a massive stone retaining wall on the south side. The old plank facing is removed and set in cement. When finished the dam and protecting walls will resist the spring floods. The Roller Mills Co has supplied stone for flood control with shared costs. Council engineer outlined the cost of erection.

Faculty Vacancies Narrow as New Year Approaches

At year end seven faculty positions existed with four filled and two moved to instruction. Next year twenty two teachers drop to eleven. Miss Margaret Houghawout will be Dean of Wright Hall and English professor. Miss Rose Deacon will teach violin. Miss Mary O. Raddy will teach English and Mathematics. two posts remain for a kindergartner and Commercial Department principal as candidates are considered.

Breakwater Construction Plan Discussed by City Council

A council debate described a stone wall extending from the at mile marker beyond River Street intersection. Members deemed side figures oversized and rejected funding. Last night the court considered anew and voted to construct the breakwater. Aldermen Demuth, Qook, and Holfentieck formed a committee to arrange the project.

Farmers Equity Picnic in Gratiot County July 31 1906

Local unions of the American Society of Equity in Gratiot and nearby counties join a basket picnic at Fox's Grove on Pine River four miles east of St Louis on July 31 1906. State organizer Geo G Winns will address farmers on securing profitable prices and explain controlled marketing and price making. A literary program complements the event with an open invitation to all interested in farm price stability and profitability.

Frogging party returns with 134 pairs of frogs

Four men named Say dam DeMuth Rowland and Barber went up Pine River with spears and equipment and returned with 134 pairs of frog legs, most about 12 inches. The group set a new record for the white section, surpassing a previous best of 122 pairs.

Alma College appoints new faculty and coaches

Alma College announced a full staff update for the next academic year. Midsummer Basket Picnic Held by Local Clubs

The Seville and Sumner Farmers Club host a midsummer basket picnic in A. G. Wiley’s woods near Elwell on Thursday August 2 1906. Arcada and Pie River Clubs invited along with all seeking recreation. Storm Devastates County Farms In Severe Cloud Burst

Reports from Breckenridge area describe major damage from a Sunday electrical storm. Charles Root near town lost a new barn withhay and wheat due to lightning. Manchester’s barns and sheds burned with no injuries reported. Telephone lines and party lines were crippled, and M McLaren's Ti Alina home was struck causing injuries. A Windsor farm barn near the city was struck but lightly damaged.

Fifty or more city ladies attended a reception at the elegant Shire Street home of Mr and Mrs Francis King Saturday afternoon.
