Canoe capsizes as two Alma youths dive for fish
Sunday at Wolf's bridge in Gratiot county a canoe with Jim and Roy overturned while they chased a catch. They quickly resurfaced, lungs filled with river water, and saved themselves from drowning. Had they stayed under, Alma State Savings Bank and Simon Messinger would have sought replacements.

DOS AL TEN SHEEP Killed by Night Dogs on Pasture
Last Sunday night dogs entered the pasture of H L Laycock and killed seven shropshire sheep and mangled five more. Roy Whitman sighted the dogs and drove them off, but they later killed three sheep on the nearby Fitzgerald property. Laycock values his loss at 100 dollars and Fitzgerald at 2000 dollars. An excavation crew offering dirt hauling for a new building advertises 25 per load with orders at the post office.

Special Train to Ashley for L O L and Rebekah Meet
Local lodge members of S O O F and Rebekahs plus many friends left at 9 A M on a special train to Ashley for the annual Gratiot county L O L gathering. Alma band members wore white duck trousers and blue coats as they marched to the depot at 8 30 A M. The band, organized last fall with twenty five members, has made notable progress and has given two weekly practice sessions. Citizens urged support for the band.

Pioneers of Pine River Recall Fifty Years in Gratiot County
Gratiot County pioneers aged into their seventies gathered at Hotel Arcada Alma for a Pine River township reunion. Hosts Mr and Mrs Silas Moody and others, with families dating back to 1853, shared hardships of early settlement, deer and wolves in forests, and land values then fifty cents an acre versus today. The event featured a noon meal, a group photo, and flowers from Forest Hill, followed by songs of the pioneer era.

Soule Leaves Alma for Champagne Hardware Trade
Henry H. Soule, longtime Alma resident and alderman from the first ward, has traded the Turek farm property for a hardware stock in Champagne. He spent April 1 in Champagne finalizing the deal with W. J. Van Patten, former stock owner. Soule will make Champagne his future home after leaving Alma Monday. He came to Alma in 1809, earned a degree in 1905, and has since been active in business, church work, and fraternal orders. His East Superior Street home was sold to George Perry.

Saturday Exhibit At Stuckey's Draws Crowds
The Stuckey grocery store hosted a National Biscuit Co display led by Frank Sybel from Mt Pleasant and a National Grocer Co show featuring Light House coffee represented by Bert Hicks. Over the Saturday afternoon and evening hours several hundred packages of National Misent goods were sold and many families enjoyed Light House coffee for breakfast the next day. Both Sybel and Hicks called the exhibit a success.
