Odd Fellows of Gratiot County mark ninety fifth anniversary

Gratiot County Odd Fellows celebrate the ninety fifth anniversary of the order in North America. Special trains from Owosso will carry delegates from North Star Ashley Elsie and nearby areas. A grand parade at 2 PM features the Alma band with cantons from Owosso Ithaca and Alma drilling on Superior Street.

Fine Durham steers shipped from Gratiot county

George Sandell and Bert Gee bought eighteen head of Durham steers from Wm. Vanderbeck of Pine River township for 8 cents per pound. The 23 000 pound lot cost over $100 per shipper and was sent to Buffalo for sale. Vanderbeck, a well known stock raiser, supervised the purchase, labeling it the finest shipment ever from Gratiot county.

Alma College Faces Bethany in Northward Showdown

Alma College travels to Davis Field to play Bethany West Virginia in a rare out of state baseball clash. Last Saturday Alma lost 13 to 1 to Michigan on Ferry Field but earned respect by facing top interstate talent. The contest draws strong support as southern teams rarely reach this far north and Alma enjoys a favored rivalry for inter state honors.

The Alma College Glee Club delivered a three part program Friday evening. Soloist T A Farnell impressed with araby songs and Lullaby while the sextet from Lucia and pieces from Pirates of Penzance drew applause. A humorous finale titled An Act of Up-to-Date Grand Opera closed the concert with strong ensemble.

Mary T Lathrop remembered by W C T U at Alma

A W C T U meeting at C J Datt's home honors Mary T Lathrop. The Michigan W C T U president from 1861 to 1875 is praised as the Daniel Webster of temperance reform. Alma notes her eloquence, vision, and lasting influence in a 1914 memorial message signed by Mrs J H Fleming.

Presbyterian Church Notes Show Growth and New Members

Last Sunday seven new members joined during communion. The pastor reviewed yearly progress including playground completion, East End Line School organization, and an average attendance of 35 from a zero enrollment. Over $1,000 was paid on debt and $4,960 was donated to missions and benevolent causes. All local expenses were met with no deficit. Next Sunday the pastor will preach on What Is God’s Work.

Auto strike injures three year old Dorothy Shong near Alma

A Saturday incident on Superior Street left three year old Dorothy Shong with a slight concussion after she attempted to cross the street. The car driven by Charles Austin struck her, tossing her aside. she was taken to Dr Garner's office before being moved to her parents' home two miles west and one mile north of Alma.

Gypsy Rover dates announced for May 21 and 22

The three act comic opera Gypsy Rover will be staged May 21 and 22 under the Ladies Guild of the Episcopal church. Miss Edith Rue sheckain of Traverse City will direct, and the caste has been selected. The production is expected to be of high quality.

Baynes Lecture Sparks Audubon Club Idea At School

Ernest Harold Baynes spoke to a large audience in the High School auditorium last Monday. Pictures of bird life impressed listeners and a temporary group formed toward an Audubon society with Dr M McCurdy as chairman to select an executive committee of five. A permanent organization is planned for Friday evening May 15.

Principal A J Duncanson Named At Mt Pleasant High

The Mt Pleas ant Times reports the School Board has hired A J Duncanson as principal of the Mt Pleasant High School. Duncanson, formerly a riverpal of Ithaca schools, is an Alma College graduate and a respected educator with recognition in educational circles and in state baseball and football.

Francis E Witter born September 22 1854 in Leroy Ingham County Michigan moved with parents to Mason at six married George D Witter of Aurelia Michigan at nineteen two children William Edwin survives and Fred D died 1893 at sixteen moved to Laingsburg 23 years ago and remained there until her death cared for the sick and afflicted till the end her life spent in service to others her final hours at a sick bed quoted the Bible verse Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Dice boxes must go in Ithaca county wide order

Prosecuting Attorney John N Everdeen ordered all dice boxes penny machines slot machines punch boards draw boards and all lotteries to be cast aside from business places in the county. The County Ministerial Association pressured for action and the order, taking effect Monday, requires removal of machines lottery cards and dice hoses. The move includes raffles by private groups and organizations and ends blanket or quilt raffles. Deputy Sheriff J D Melman issued city orders Saturday morning under Everdeen's direction.

Gallagher sells stock to Saad and Gallagher joins Miller Bros

Last Friday morning S Gallagher & Co sold their stock of novelty goods to N E Saad a well known progressive businessman after years of experience. Mr Gallagher has entered the employ of Miller Bros the Grocers. The track team held an outdoor practice for the first time Monday afternoon with twelve men reporting for practice focusing mainly on running.

Gratiot County athletic meet retools events at Alma

The Gratiot County Athletic Association executive board met in Alma to revise the event lineup for the state meet. Changes include eliminating several events from Class A and B, adding new races, and preserving the 120 high hurdles. The tennis tournament will have boys and girls singles and doubles at 9 30 a m. Local officials and attendees included Glenn Crisp, Howard Potter, Mr Lott, Mr Hopkins, and Mr Burnham with Thomas Wood and Mrs F E Brown noted in other duties. Final arrangements await another executive board meeting in a few weeks.
