Republic Motor Truck to Expand Factory on Bridge Street

The Republic Motor Truck Company plans a 500 foot long brick one story addition on Bridge Street extending its building to 60x00 feet. The project adds 30,000 square feet for truck manufacturing to meet rising orders. Last week 150 orders were logged and 37 complete trucks were loaded for shipment. The expansion aims to relieve capacity strain caused by rapid growth amid nationwide freight car shortages and regulatory delays.

Lyceum Benefit Recital at College Chapel Friday Night

Mission Circle Meets at Mrs Froush Home

The Woman's Mission Circle of the Baptist church held a regular meeting Wednesday afternoon at Mrs Henry Froush's home. Mrs John Becker led the lesson from The King's Highway. Victoria provided music. Mrs E J Boyle led the devotional, and Mrs Movkeridge read a paper. The Indies remained in take up with the hewtons. Carl Street spent the weekend with his parents in Wheeler.

Berman Married in Chicago Last Sunday

Mr KB Berman of Alma and Miss Ida Ligh of Chicago were united in marriage at the bride’s father home on Sunday evening April 2, 1918. The ceremony was performed by Rabbi Teijowki assisted by Rabbi D Light of Bay City. Over one hundred guests attended and a sumptuous supper followed. Messages of congratulations came from across the state as the couple plan to reside in a newly purchased home on Snead Street.

High School Builds Strong Track and Baseball Teams

Obituary of John Degroft Dies After Stroke in Arcada

John Degroft born in Pennsylvania in 1842 died at home in Arcada on April 4 1916 after a stroke on March 17. He married Phoebe A Wickersham in 1860. they had ten children three decades ago he moved to Gratiot County where his wife died. Funeral services were held at Alma Methodist Church with Rev. Brownlow officiating and interment at Riverside beside his wife.

Council gives park to school for bird sanctuary

City council approves use of a pondside park across from Union School to create a bird sanctuary with 50 small wrens houses. Prof McCurdy of Alma College to oversee setup by 200 member club, starting next Wednesday, with shelters planned for winter.

Spiritual Music At Church Of Christ Evening Meetings

A series of three religious meetings was held last Sunday with about twenty five delegates from St Louis attending. Mrs Rawins Monday talk drew a full house and praise for her personality and interpretation. Baum will discuss themes each evening and Simmons will sing his best solos. The large chorus continues growing with improving singing. A men’s meeting is planned Sunday at three with Baum and Simmons, inviting all men.

Wealth and virtue in a college man themed vesper

President Crooks addressed a union vesper service of the W M C A on wealth and a college man’s relation to money. He argued that wealth alone cannot bring happiness culture or morality but proper use and attitude toward wealth can integrate these ideals into life. Musical selections by Anderson and Blinsteah enhanced the meeting.

Combination sale to be held in Alma on April 22

A combination auction will take place on the vacant lot north of the 1 0. P. block in Alma. Citizens may list property for sale with Royal Hyde or Day Ape by April 17 and it will be advertised in the Record on April 20. Milman vell acts as auctioneer. The Civic League asks residents to wash out cane prior to the event.

Club Meets Seville and Surmmay Farmers Club Hosts Visitors

The Seville and Surmmay farmers club was royally entertained Thursday by Rev and Mrs Mason and others from Art. Members and friends gathered at the Clyneuidt home, then enjoyed a bounteous noon dinner at Rev and Mrs Mason’s adjacent home. An afternoon program at the Olmstead residence featured piano solo, seed corn talk by Mr Thague of M A A farm corps department, and a responding music quartet from the high school.

Petition to designate state roads urged in two counties

The boards of Ionia and Montcalm counties forwarded petitions to the State Highway Commission seeking state road designations west of Alma to the county line and a link from Gratiot County through Vestaburg Edmore to Lakeview with a connection to routes to Greenville and Grand Rapids. Doll of the Isthmus Entertains at Lyceum Next Wednesday

Miss Gay Zenola MacLaren will present an imitative recital act at the Wright opera house next Wednesday evening April 19 under Alma Lyceum course auspices. She mimics entire productions after viewing them without reading the books. Her Panama tour included 107 recitals and earned her the title Idol of the Isthmus. Tickets are fifty cents with reserved seats for nonseason-ticket holders.

First Hike of Junior Scout Troop Delivers Rough Outing

The juniors embarked last Saturday at eleven in piercing cold. After a two mile hike they reached a sheltered field where fires were built and appetizing rations prepared. The group returned to the city by around two o'clock, unanimously agreeing they had a good time.

Can Jose Scale Now in Orchards to Seize Our Fruit

The San Jose scale is in many Michigan southwest orchards and, without control, will kill infested trees and spread. State law requires spraying or destroying infested trees to prevent spread. Remedies include sulfur preparations and calphide with precise mixing, to be applied dormant or as buds open. Applications should cover trees from four sides, with timing from early July if first week scales persist. Birdhouse project at the high school sells small homes to fund nature study, while Alma hosts its School of Methods July 24-28 with faculty from W R Gammon and others.

Alma College Glee Club Concert Delights City

The Alma College Glee Club gave one of the best concerts in the city at the opera house last Friday under Prof Veatch. It capped the season’s tour as a highly successful effort by the college. The piece was well performed and drew a good sized crowd. A separate note records the marriage of Mee Daisy Robart to Mr John Chapman at the bride’s brother’s home on Wright Avenue with Rev J W Priest officiating. Both are respected members of the Salvation Army Corps.

Entertain Philathea Club Meeting at Mrs Johnenn Home

The Philathea club of the Baptist church held its regular meeting last Monday evening at the home of Mrs DL Johnenn. Piano lessons were made for the Easter bazaar. After the ladies finished their fancy work, refreshments were served. Dewitt Vought and son Downey were in Ithees on business Monday.

City Council Meeting Sets Committees and Road Repairs

Mayor McKinnes chaired a pedial council session at City Hall Monday night naming standing committees including Strout-Khoertner Like Glan Fire-McConkey Ogden Mulleeten Claimy Acte-Lake and others. Steps were taken to compel paving contractors to repair poor pavement across several city areas, with bond action possible if repairs are unsatisfactory.

A Regent Banquet in Alma established a women’s society for recreation and instruction. Mrs C G Rhodes presided as chair. officers elected include President Mixx Rote Measinger and four vice presidents. Four groups Sewing cooking basket weaving and gym activities created with volunteer instructors. Meetings set for Tuesday evenings at 7 in the high school building.

Swift & Company changes managers at Alma plant

Last Monday J P Barrett of Jackson I IA joined Swift & Co at the Alma plant, taking over the superintendent's desk from L T Sheter. Sigler remains for several weeks then heads to Chicago for instruction. Sigler has 13 years with Swift and eight years in Alma. Barrett arrives from Jackson IA where he managed the produce house. Barrett is praised as a capable business man.

Judge Kelly Sears Named Chair of Jurisprudence at University of Detroit

Judge Kelly Sears of the twenty ninth judicial circuit covering Clinton and Gratiot counties has been appointed to chair jurisprudence in the University of Detroit law department. He will give one weekly lecture due to ongoing judicial duties.

Wiley couple wed in Alma area as friends gather

Ray Cheist and Edna Wiley, highly respected young people west of Alma, were married at Edna's parents home on Wednesday night April 12. Rev. J W Priest officiated. Imony witnessed by near relatives. The newlyweds receive best wishes from many friends and Rev. Alfred Ray Atwood of Lansing visited Alma earlier in the week.

Death of C E Bonesteel at Wheeler aged 69

C E Bonesteel died at his Wheeler home aged 69. Funeral services were held at the Wheeler M E Church. He came to Michigan as a young man and settled in Wheeler in 1880. He married Thirza E Holdem in 1874. four children were born, one son died in infancy. His wife died in March. He remarried Viola Sexton who survives him. He was a devoted church worker and resident of the community for many years.

Arcade Partners Club April Meeting at Wolfe Home
