Ellsworth Named Hastings School Superintendent

F J Meward Ellsworth, superintendent of Alma public schools since 1905, has been offered and accepted the Hastings Barry County school superintendency at 2500 dollars annually. He and Mrs Ellsworth will relocate, bringing experienced leadership to Barry County’s metropolitan schools.

Alma Schools Leader Ellsworth Honored for Nine Years of Growth

SUPER has led the Alma mal department of the city schools for nine years guiding a village school system into a bustling Michigan city. His organizing and teaching strength attracted a top faculty and foreign students, boosting resources and statewide attention. The Alma board offered him $2,000 for the next year as Hastings bids higher. Miss McGreaham, a standout music and drawing teacher, accepts a Hastings offer with a church position pushing her Alma salary beyond 1,000.

Uncle Tom's Cabin Cotton Picking Scene In Alma

The Stetson production of Uncle Tom's Cabin at Realty Opera House Alma on April 10 features a lifelike cotton picking scene. Manager Leon Washburn pursued exacting details, including real cotton plants preserved by shellac, to recreate a Red River home setting with plants from a Louisiana plantation.

Cohen Bros Sell Damaged Stock to Detroit Firm

Cohen Bros sold all stock damaged by fire or water to Jacobstein Co of Detroit who will move it to their store there. Cohen Bros will begin extensive repairs on their store room and reopen with a new stock of gentlemen's clothing shoes and haberdashery. Mrs John White left hospital Tuesday after a successful operation and three weeks stay.

Alma Common Council Adjourns to Tabulate Bids

State Street Pang Alma Mich March 31 1914 Adjourned regular meeting of the Common Council of the City of Alma in Connell rooms on the above date. The Council was called to order by the Mayor Hon J M Montigel with present Alds Rowland Peery Cook Ward and Kel in. There being a quorum the Council opened paying bids. On motion they adjourn to 7 30 p m to allow the engineer time to tabulate bids. At 7 30 p m the Council reassembled with Alds Rowland Peery Willard Cook Ward Kehn and Fraker present. State Street paving bids and district plan approved

The council accepted McDermott & Cooper Grand Rapids bid for two course concrete paving on State Street for 14412 20, ordered contracting bonds, and divided paving into two districts with Superior Street to Ebwell and Ebwell to Elwell. It also approved bond returns for several contractors and set April 6 election use of the coring machine.

Thousands Witness Alma Street Horse Show Parade

Thousands witnessed a successful Alma street horse show last Saturday with a procession of Percheron and Belgian horses and pairs, led by owners from Alma and surrounding townships. The parade along paved streets drew large crowds who cheered the equine display across Gratiot County.

Obituary notes for Jacob H Bauer and family movements

Jacob H Bauer born August 3 1882 in North Hampton Pennsylvanian Allegheny Co. son of Charles and Saloma Bauer. He moved with his parents to Barberton Ohio at age ten and married Mary Grill at 21. Five of seven children survive him after Marys death about three years ago. He lived in Michigan before moving to Forest Hill then died March 21 1914 after a brief illness aged ML years 7 months 12 days.

Refreshments and election mark Wheeler WCTU gathering

The Wheeler WCTU annual meeting featured a potluck dinner hosted by Mr. and Mrs. O L Maxson on the 26th. Members wore birth month ribbons as they celebrated March birthdays and elected Mrs. Myrta Youngs as president, Mrs. Cora Wilson secretary, and Maud Alle treasurer amid thanks and remarks from district and state officers. The session closed with plans for the year and an April 30 dues gathering.

Gratiet County Y M C A Holds Second Ithaca Convention

The Gratiot County Y M C A convened in Ithaca March 27 28 29 1914 with officers elected for one year led by President Old Smith and Treasurer Lloyd Thomas. A banquet nightly talks by Clifford Matheld and Dr J Busiell featured displays of vigor, competition and devotion among fellows, culminating in a Sunday farewell with 42 pledges to greater effort.

Infantile paralysis claims young Florence Sharrar

Florence Sharrar ten year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Melvin Sharrar and granddaughter of D L Sharrar of Alma died March 26 after a bout with infantile paralysis. Rev Mason of Alma officiated at the funeral and interment was in Riverdale cemetery. The community extends sympathy to the Sharrar family.
