President Nixon's proposed income surtax extension encounters its first big congressional test as the House Ways and Means Committee faces pressure to act this week. The 10 percent surtax would expire at month’s end without congressional approval.
A former Air Force management consultant told Congress costs for the Minuteman II missile program will exceed original estimates by about 3.7 billion dollars. Tyrrell’s figures clash with Air Force estimates and come as Congress probes defense procurement practices. The hearing also touched on inflation and fiscal policy as the administration seeks support for surtax extensions.

A car-truck crash on U S Highway 40 in Manhattan Putnam County killed Stanley Shopa III shown as three years old. His mother Elizabeth A Shopa 26 was in critical condition at Rupert W Long Hospital Indianapolis. State police said the foreign-made car driven by Mrs Shopa collided with a Put-
Police said the Shopa car eastbound on U S 40 collided with a county road truck driven by 19 year old Howard G Adamson of Green Castle. The accident occurred at 1 25 p m Tuesday with Adamson uninjured.
U S officials monitor Hanoi for a reply to President Nixon urging a North Vietnamese pullback equal to the 25 000 troop pullout from South Vietnam. Early signs show a negative response, with propaganda against Nixon and renewed combat offensives after a lull. The reaction may hinge on the Midway Island meeting between Nixon and South Vietnam's Nguyen Van Thieu.
Garfield High School Class of 1969 will receive diplomas in commencement ceremonies on Wednesday June 11 at 8 o clock in the Indiana State University Arena. Graduation honors and awards will be presented by principal Bradley Lorton. Dr George Hays will receive the class, with music by the Garfield Band.
Elizabeth Blackwell, born in England, became the first woman in the United States to receive an M.D. after facing rejection from multiple medical schools. She earned her degree at Geneva College in New York.
North Vietnamese forces attacked three U S bases south of Da Nang during the night. The U S Command reported 14 Americans killed and 68 wounded with 76 enemy killed. At a main foothill base 30 miles south eleven Americans died and 32 wounded in hand to hand fighting the 196th Brigade faced a 70 round mortar barrage. U S losses were one dead seven wounded and eight enemy dead were counted near another attack. B52s bombed along the Cambodian and Laotian borders near Dak To and Saigon.
Lt Steven G Schimmel a 1965 Wiley graduate and Terre Haute native was fatally injured in an aircraft accident in South Vietnam on June 3. He entered the Army in 1966 and served as a reconnaissance pilot with the 219 Aviation Reconnaissance Company 17th Aviation Group. Survived by his parents siblings and grandmother, arrangements at Callahan Funeral Home pending.
