Indiana Governor Handley announced a plan to force township school consolidation through a statewide reorganization. He asked Lt. Gov. Parker to form a subcommittee to study the system and draft laws for the 1959 legislature, aiming for greater efficiency and economy in school operation.
Two geneticists told Congress that each nuclear test raises the risk of shortened or damaged unborn lives. Dr. Herman J. Muller and Dr. James F. Crow warned that worldwide future generations could suffer hundreds of thousands or more affected births due to fallout.
Washington June 4 economists and businessmen told a two week probe into tax cuts and monetary policy that the economy lacks enough zip for urgent income tax reduction. Secretary Dulles and Secretary Wilson announced that Army Specialist 3 C William S Girard will be tried by Japanese courts for the January 30 fatal shooting at Camp Weir Japan The joint statement cites a May 16 agreement by the U S Japan joint committee that jurisdiction would be in Japan and vows full protection of Girard's legal rights
The thirty second Gerstmeyer Tech High School commencement exercises begin at 8 p.m. in the Gerstmeyer Memorial Gymnasium. Processional by the class of 1957 opens the program followed by invocation, the Star Spangled Banner and Pledge. The chorus performs Ride the Chariot and the Girls Glee Club sings O Lord, We Worship Thee. The choir joins Linda Kay Smith for I’m Proud to Be an American. Woodrow Wilson speaks on the general theme, with named students listed for further remarks.
A 25 man State Highway crew and a fleet of trucks started the second phase of Operation Resurfacing in Terre Haute. Wabash avenue from the river bridge to Ninth and one half street is being resurfaced while one lane of U S Highway 40 remains open. Traffic officers control intersections and parking is restricted as materials move to the site. City crews also resume and extend street repairs as weather allows.
Herbert Morrow aged 34 was sentenced May 31 to 30 days for disorderly conduct and made a trusty. On Monday he was sent to a cleaning detail across the street but has not returned.
Edmond Talucci former director of State Industries and Farms says he recommended the use of an engine additive to state vehicles on his own initiative after testing a sample. He explained he wrote letters to departments without orders. The Marion County Grand Jury investigating the highway scandal heard two other witnesses. Dr R E Clift testified he sold property near Indianapolis to the state in July 1955 for $87 000.
Mrs. Nellie Maxine Corby, 21, of Terre Haute, escaped from the Indiana Women's Prison Monday after obtaining permission to go to the dispensary. Parole revocation notice dated April 30, 1957 shows she was paroled Dec. 24, 1955 following Jan. 25, 1955 probation violation and Oct. 18, 1954 sentence.
Senate Rackets Committee ordered contempt proceedings against Dave Beck Jr and his nephew Joseph McEvoy after they refused to answer on Beck union payroll. Beck Jr and McEvoy invoked the Fifth Amendment repeatedly, declining to discuss salaries and ties to the Teamsters Union.
In Germany near Kempten June 4, Federal Defense Minister Franz Josef Strauss took charge of the probe into the deaths of 15 German army recruits during a night march into the Iller River. Hundreds aided by Red Cross volunteers scoured the river from a bridge glow as 34 men attempted the crossing. 15 fell to the water and 4 others were rescued or died later. Sgt. Peter Julitz faces arrest after allegedly ordering the march into the river.
Dave Beck, president of the Teamsters Union, is due in U S District Court in Tacoma to enter a plea on income tax evasion charges. He allegedly cheated the government of 565,520 for 1950 and faced a grand jury indictment from May 2 accusing him of helping prepare a fraudulent tax return.
Indianapolis June 4 seven more fatalities pushed Indiana Memorial Day toll to 17. The latest victim was Joseph Rolla 45 of Gary who died Sunday night when his car collided with a tree near the U S 6 and Ind 53 junction in Lake County.
Three bombs exploded during Algiers evening rush hour injuring 87 as six people died instantly including a woman and two children. A six year old French boy and a Muslim man died later, bringing the toll to eight. The blasts struck crowded streetcar stops and a bus, marking a feared new rebel campaign.
