Sheriff Probes Penal Farm Check Incident
Vigo County deputies investigated a Terre Haute case where Maurice Baxter, former State Farm inmate, claimed Indiana State Farm cashed his disabled check in his absence, deducted a due bill, and forwarded the balance while officials allegedly stopped payment. The deputies later cashed the check for Baxter at a restaurant and returned the money before restaurant owners reported the incident.

Three Women Die In Worcester Hotel Fire
A pre dawn blaze at the Hotel Pleasant in Worcester Massachusetts killed three women and injured at least nine others. About 50 residents were saved with four in critical condition at City Hospital. The fire origin remains undetermined and the building was a six story brick wood structure.

Balloon Ascends To Stratosphere In 18 Mile Flight
Air Force Captain Joe Kittinger soared 18 miles into the stratosphere in a balloon ascent from Minnesota. Lawyer Carmell Dies After Jump From 15th Floor
Chicago reports state Daniel D. Carmell 58 prominent labor attorney and Illinois Federation of Labor general counsel died in a plunge from his Hyde Park apartment after facing a Mann Act charge. Infant struck by father's car in Montezuma
A 14 month old girl, Marsha Britton, daughter of Dr. W. D. Britton, was injured Monday when her father backed a car from the driveway in Montezuma. She suffered severe head and facial contusions and was admitted to Union Hospital for X rays and observation. Police called the Johnson case from May 29 a tragically similar mishap.
